How difficult is it for an out of state kid to get into the SUNY schools? I'm from Mass and I really like Geneseo and Binghamton, but I don't know how tough they are to get into.

4.0 GPA (weighted)
1540 SATs (+650 writing)
football captain, 7 lead roles in musical theatre as EC highlights

Thanks
You really think so? Just to clarify the 4.0 is on a scale that does reach 6 at my school (with APs) I'm not really sure if its different in other areas... My school doesn't report rankings but mine definately wouldn't be top 25%, which seems pretty common at Geneseo, so i was a little bit worried about that .

Why would you want to go to a SUNY if you have such a high SAT score? Binghamton is alright, but it's definitely a huge safety for you. If I were you, I would look into the Queens Honors program in CUNY-Queens College. The student body is virtually on par with the Ivies. You get free tuition, a stipend for books, apartment, etc. and you get a free laptop.

Ditto to the comment above. If you apply to CUNY Honors, you get a lot of great incentives. You literally are paid to go to school and you get a great apartment usually in the middle of the city. My friend is attending CUNY Hunter Honors and she'll be living in midtown next year. I know if you are in the Baruch Honors program, you get an Ipod as well. If you're looking for an active social life to coexist with a rigorous academic journey, apply to CUNY Honors instead of a SUNY. Many of the SUNYs are located upstate NY, where in my opinion, there isn't much to offer in terms of the location.

^^Your GPA isn't that great, unless you can show some sort of extenuating circumstances; i.e., you go to an extremely rigorous private high school, you've suffered from depression, e.t.c. Regardless, I'd say you definitely have a shot at CUNY honors, and yes, for you, the SUNY schools are absolute safeties. You should aim higher.

Thanks, any suggestions for places that wuold be considered aiming higher? Maybe another school that has a good honors program? or just any schools in the New England, New York, PA, NJ area that I could get into even with my GPA? (my recs, essay, interview, and ECs will be good I think)

wait...is it 1540 out of 1600, or out of 2400.

If it is out of 1600, then you are in for sure.

But why Suny. With a 4.0w and a 1540 u could try much greater publics and at least get into some.

Try applying to some UCs (the best u could probably get into though would be UCSD)
U of washington
UMich
UIllinois UC
(that is assuming you uw is a 3.0)

If it is like 3.4, you might want to try some privates, like Boston U, NYU, GWU, etc.

Also, try canadian schools. McGill and U of toronto are two of the best recognized schools in the world, as well as extremely difficult.

UBC has incredible science.

And oh yeah, canadian schools are way easier for US applicants to get into than most other top publics in the US (UMICH, UCLA,Cal)
And they are very affordable for international students.

Would I really be able to get into McGill?
Also, what about Lafayette or Colgate?
I was thinking the SUNY schools were pretty good, and everyone seems to have positive things to say about them, plus they seemed like they wouldn't be that easy for me to get into

As a person coming from out-of-state, it might seem more difficult to get into the SUNYs. The SUNYs are great but there are so many more opportunities for you, especially if you want a social life. At certain SUNYs like Bing, all you do for your social life is party. All my Bing friends party when they're not studying since there isn't anything to do off-campus. Eventually you'll get bored of partying if you do it every single week.

I think you would have a good shot at McGill. A lot of my friends applied and got in and they don't have the most stellar grades. Regardless of their grades, they're going to get the opportunity to explore a different part of the hemisphere and get a great education at a large research institution.

Also do you think I'd have a shot at getting into any CUNY honors schools, possibly with the intention of transferring up if my grades are good?

What about patriot league schools like holy cross, colgate, and lafayette? too high up? not quite high enough? do those sound good or are there others you would suggest?

I think you would have a good chance getting into CUNY Honors. It doesn't hurt to try applying at all so go for it. To me, getting into CUNY Honors doesn't seem as difficult as everyone first makes it sound. Maybe it's the people I've seen getting into CUNY Honors this year that make me conclude such a thing. Some were extremely qualified but there were others who were just average (one person was suspended for fighting and cheating on exams).
