Which one of the SUNY's and CUNY's is good for Mechanical engineering ?

SUNY Buffalo and Stony Brook are generally considered the best for engineering, not so about CUNY engineering. Really depends on where you want to be, imo.

CUNY City College as well.

[The Grove School of Engineering](http://www1.ccny.cuny.edu/prospective/gsoe/)

So over all from all the SUNY’s and CUNY’s which is the best one for engineering ?

Also which one is nearer to civilization… decent professors and good internships at engineering firms ?

Of the three mentioned in this thread (Stony Brook, City College, and Buffalo), “nearer to civilization” would obviously be City College which is in Manhattan. But none of them are in the boonies - even Stony Brook.

Stony brook is a terrible place (I go there). Go to Buffalo. Every aspect of yourself will thank you.

So its City college vs Buffalo vs Stony brook !. Which one is best for mechanical engineering, has good internships and a good social atmosphere. Quality of education is my main priority.

BUMP … 10char

Fine don’t listen to me - you’ll regret it! Guarenteed.

What about city college vs Buffalo ?

Son is Mech. Eng. major at Buffalo. He is very impressed with the school and dept. Very happy there. I don’t think Stony Brook would be a good fit for him (and we live inteh next town!!)

Bump it up …

What’s the weather like in Buffalo? I’ve never been there, but some complain that it’s too cold. Is it?

Mom2 - I have started my app process for Bama and I hope that I get in.

I am looking at City college vs Buffalo as well since I have some family in NYC.

P.S- My mom is a bit worried about sending a girl alone to the US for studies.

^^^^
I was just wondering about the weather at Buffalo because on an earlier thread/post someone wrote that the weather is super cold (perhaps a wind-chill factor is involved?). I have no idea if that’s true or not; I’ve never been to Buffalo. Anyone know? (Maybe I should check the weather report. LOL)

As for danger on campuses (or anywhere)…

I think it’s wise for women EVERYWHERE (not just at colleges) to use some safe strategies to minimize risk. Avoid walking alone at night. Don’t leave bars/clubs by yourself. Always be looking around. Don’t walk at night with an iPod in your ears or texting messages. (There was a girl who was kidnapped from a parking lot a few years ago, and her murderer admitted that the girl was likely distracted by the iPod in her ears. She obviously didn’t hear him approach her, nor was she likely looking around.

Many campuses now offer escort services (not that kind of escort service!!! LOL) for students who find themselves having to walk alone at night. Some offer free rides or escorts.

OK…out of curiosity, I checked The Weather Channel for weather in Buffalo.

Right now
25° F
Feels Like: 14° F (because of wind-chill factor.)

Is that typical for winter in Buffalo? ( I know that the country is having a lot of snow these days).

I went to college in Rochester and lived in the Syracuse area for many years. Buffalo weather can be brutal. It gets something like 150 inches of snow every year, and when the wind blows off of the lakes it is not a lot of fun.

NYC is much more mild.

Buffalo weather can be brutal. It gets something like 150 inches of snow every year, and when the wind blows off of the lakes it is not a lot of fun.

What??? Is that true? Oh my goodness…that’s 12 feet of snow!

I totally understand “the wind blowing off the lakes” part. I know that we visit H’s family near Lake Michigan in the winter and when the wind blows…OMG…the windchill factor makes the temp go WAY below 0.

I think UB has the better general reputation (not because it’s better overall just out of name recognition- it’s more well known) and both City College and UB are commuter schools, but UB is known for a pretty large Greek system/party scene (if that’s what you want for a social life). If you want a city-type social life though, City College would probably be a lot better. Also, this Stony Brook hating is sort of unfair. At a school that’s not picturesque like Stony Brook, college is what you make of it, but I know people who are there that are very happy. It’s close to NYC so you could always visit, and I know plenty of people there who like it.

I wouldn’t consider a painful 2.5 hour ride to nyc “close”.
Also if anyone is happy at stony brook, they’re probably a commuter
