How do kids (particularly Stern kids) dress for classes everyday? Dressy, preppy, casual or (dare I say it) formal?

Hi, Audrey,

I read on these forums you may see kids dressed very formally in class, but these are students who are going off to work, internships or interviews.

Normally, I would say students dress however they want to class, to be comfortable as they listen to long lectures. But I will let the students share their own personal experiences and observations.

However, take a look at this link (so I am not really sure if some students do dress up for class time/ group work):

[NYU Stern | Current Students](http://www.stern.nyu.edu/CurrentStudents/index.htm)

For my classes at least, I rarely or never see anyone wearing sweat pants. For the most part it’s jeans (or similar) with button down shirts/sweaters/cardigans, etc. It’s not very formal, mostly just a nice casual. However, I’m not in Stern. I’m in CAS politics/philosophy.

Thanks evolving! Thanks NYU2013!

I’m glad it’s smart casual, because I don’t see myself wearing a suit every day! :)

as stated previously, there are always a few people who wear full on suits to class, but its because they have a job or other places to be. this is especially prominent in the grad schools. nyu as a whole is kind of “lookbook”-y though. i’ve seen more men wearing gigantic navajo indian ponchos than i have girls in sweatpants, so take that as you will.

Agreed with paige. Too much emphasis here goes into appearance, there are some people who dress for the catwalk each and every morning to the point where there was even a fairly large facebook group mocking them.

The only kids in Stern you see in professional clothing are either coming from or heading to a professional event (work, interview, networking). i.e. last semester I was in a full suit and tie at least two days a week because I had long class days and seminars, networking events, corporate info sessions, or interviews every week between October and finals. Other than that, people tend to rock jeans + whatever. Some kids will be in tees, others in button downs. It doesn’t matter. As a girl not much is expected of you in terms of dress, there’s a bit of a stereotype at NYU that no female in Stern is good-looking or fun haha.

Outside of Stern though, there’s kids who take sartorialism to new levels each and every day along with girls who look like they’re wearing each designer’s wildest creations for two seasons ahead. That isn’t the norm, but it’s not strange either. Freshmen typically dress the worst in general.

I’m not a student (I’m applied to CAS though) but I thought I’d put in my two cents anyway. It’s NYU! You’re in New York City so just wear whatever you want, no one will judge you. I’m sure there are some people in jeans, some in sweatshirts, and some in suits. It’s probably a mix. It doesn’t matter if you fit in there. Just do your own thing and that will make you fit in Congratulations on Stern!

Thanks paigeohno! Thanks hellodocks!
Thanks lorrainedelis, and I hope you get good news on April 1st from NYU :)

aw thanks Audrey! :)
