Supplement Essay

I'm applying to LS&A, and the supplement prompt is:
Describe the unique qualities that attract you to the specific undergraduate College or School (including preferred admission and dual degree programs) to which you are applying at the University of Michigan. How would that curriculum support your interests? (500 words maximum)

How should I go about this essay...? What are they really looking for? I feel like I should mention that I went to UM for a week over the summer, but while I was there, I couldn't get much SPECIFIC info regarding LS&A. Also, is it a good idea to mention specific names of people that I met there?

The prompt is very self-explanatory. They’re not trying to get anything out of you that isn’t in the question. It’s not a puzzle.

If you don’t know enough about the school to easily answer it, perhaps you should reconsider why you’re applying…

Try to give them an idea of who you are and why College of LS&A is a good fit for you and why admitting you is a good idea for the school. Convey some sense of how U-M will be a better community if you are part of it.

I approached it as a Why Michigan? essay. LSA is probably the most difficult to write about because there really is nothing specifically special about it within UM but these essays are relatively flexible. You could write it as how LSA and Michigan will help you with your major and how UM as a whole attracts you. Obviously this is only one way to approach this essay.

Yeah and bash the other colleges like Ross. Seriously though, you could mention the huge variety of language classes, the research opportunities, or something specific to your goals. If you’re wanting to go into medicine for example, LSA is pretty useful for that.
