Hello, I am currently a Michigan high school senior intending to apply to U of M for EA. I just wrote a draft of the supplemental essay (the "Why Michigan?" prompt) in which I talked about the most appealing aspect of the university being the large variety world-class academic disciplines to choose from. However, I feel slightly worried that this essay simply makes me seem scattered and confused about my interests and therefore less appealing. Nonetheless, I would really appreciate if some posters (preferably not high school students) take a look at my draft for some feedback on the general concept.

Just post and I can pm it to you. Note, this is the first draft and I am yet to polish it. Do not worry so much about syntax or grammar as I would likely correct those as I revise over the next few days. I would like the posters to focus more on the general ideas presented in the essay.

Thanks very much!

The prompt is on “why this school”. You should go into more specific about why LSA or CoE at UMich. Don’t just make it looks like an advertisement of the school but how those things are important to you. Which particular program, major, clubs, etc you are interested in? How do those different from other schools you have considered? The adcom is not interested in reading how great UMich is but why you think it is a perfect fit for you.

I would describe myself as someone with broad interests and who is somewhat undecided with what he wants to major in. Therefore, I felt the most appealing feature of LSA (and Umich in general) was that it was strong across so many disciplines which would allow me to explore. Nonetheless, I did discuss my interests and some of the programs I may be interested. However, I will remain mindful and make sure I am not falling into the pitfalls that you described.

On a side note, I expressed interest in the flexibility offered by cross-campus transferring to CoE after freshman year if I realized I liked there more than LSA. Would it be bad to discuss that if I am applying to LSA?

What do you think if you tell a school you may consider transferring out?
