supplement submission issues...

Hi, asking for opinions…

Situation is, I initially intended to fax my supplements over, but only managed to get the fax working on the 1st of Jan. When I tried, the fax machine over at Midd isn’t even on. It’s still not on actually. Should’ve expected it…>_<

So my options are:

Try again on the 2nd, since probably the office should be open by then. Problem is, if their fax machine is still not on by the 2nd, well… I might ran into rush of people sending in stuff too, if most applications are the last-minute type.

Go run down to the post office now, though I’ll probably get Jan 3rd, or if I’m lucky, Jan 2nd on the postmark date. Since I’m international, the mail will probably take weeks to arrive–even if it’s airmail. But there won’t be much of a difference in arrival time had I mailed it on Jan 1st.

My applications are already submitted online before deadline via commonapp, the references were mailed by the school on the 30th [darn they’re always last-minute, like me.] so ought to arrive mid-jan. Oh I’m going for the regular decision deadline of jan 1st…so well I’m technically late for supplements.

So…suggestions?

im having the same issue, fax isn't going through...im contemplating emailing it to them, explaining issue, mailing it tmrw again and leaving voicemail

As someone who knows what it's like to be swamped in accidental duplicates, I wouldn't advise multiple submissions. I would try to fax - and I imagine it's either out of paper or backed up (since so many others were having issue getting it to connect). I would email and follow up with a phone call. I can't speak to international because I don't know the time difference, but.. I still recommend doing just one option. Then again, I could be completely wrong.

Their fax is on, but the lines been busy for a while and now its past the deadline... =/

Please ignore my post, actually their fax is still turned off..

Phew...so it means I'm not the only one with the problem...

AH email. but anyway, I don't have a scanner so email's out.

I guess I'll try again on the 2nd? It's faster than mail at any rate.

OK I just checked--their machine is ON now~~~

Their fax was on yesterday but it probably didn't go through for you because it was busy - all of us procrastinators trying to submit it at once, and only one app can go through the line at a time for the fax.

Trust me, I sat by the machine for 45 minutes until I got a clear tone. I still don't trust that something I submit through an old machine is going to come out on their end...

I don't know what to tell you. Just fax it ASAP, and when you tried faxing it and it was busy, did you get a print-out slip with the time and "Failed to go through" or whatever it said? Send that over too so they see that you tried before the deadline.

faxed. thanks everyone

I suspect it was not on, because over my side it did not say 'busy' -- which it did multiple times when I was trying to send today before finally getting through. Rather, it said either "unknown error" or prompt me to check if the number is correct or whatsoever, yesterday.

But at any rate...I hope they don't mind the few hours of late-ness -- I mean, had I chosen the mail option mailed on the 30th or something, the mail would probably have arrived only in around mid-jan... Fax is past deadline, but still earlier...

If you can't get through by fax, I recommend that you mail the supplements today. I mailed mine several years ago on Jan 3 because 1st was a Sunday and Monday was a holiday and they still accepted them. It will take them weeks to sort through all the mail, faxes, etc. Also, I think a printed version might be easier to read than a fax.

That might have been true several years ago, but faxes now are typically exactly like ink jet printers and so I wouldn't worry so much about quality - although the sorting thing might be an issue, especially if you didn't put your name/birthdate/or SS# on each page. I also highly recommend numbering pages of your paper. Son's issue isn't when it was transmitted, it's that the teachers comments were in Blue Caps and the fax could only be accepted black and white and so any comments are merely in caps -- and not perhaps not easily noted except at the end of the paper. He did put on the top that they were in blue caps when he said what the assignment was, but still.. they aren't blue.

finally faxed mine too. should I contact the admissions to explain why it was late?

In my case, I don't have a fax machine -- so it went like this:

scanner-->adobe photoshop to make the image monochrome, adjust brightness/saturation-->insert image into msword & add a header of my name and page number --> fax using the computer.

I settled on the final resolution of 100pixels/inch, hopefully it'll be clear enough.

Hell lot of trouble as compared to just feeding it into the fax machine.

On top of that, I typed out the whole essay [1500+ words, dies] and all the teacher's comments and emailed that out as a reference version, since well my handwriting was messy 'cuz it's done during my recent major exam, and the teacher's handwriting is...worse. Explained that I couldn't reach their fax machine till a few hours past deadline in the email.

erebus, even though it was a day late, I doubt that it'll matter all that much. At least, that's what I'm telling myself--I mailed mine in, but I live in MA and the mailman didn't come Dec. 31 because we had a big snowstorm. So my essay sat in the mailbox on Dec 31 and Jan 1, and then finally went out today. It'll be postmarked Jan 2, but I guess I'm not horribly worried. That'd be kind of ridiculous if they denied you admission based on the fact that your supplement was a day late based on extenuating circumstances, right?

I still feel bad that mine won't get to them until after the deadline, but I'm trying really really really hard not to think that it'll count against me much. Besides, at least your fax already got to Vermont--mine essay's probably not even out of Massachusetts yet...
