Surprise Waitlist from William & Mary

Me: waitlisted at W & M, accepted at UR

My Friend w/much lower STATS: in at W & M, waitlisted at UR

Go figure! I guess they didn't want us attending the same school. LOL

man. admissions is soooooo subjective!

what it tells the class of 2011 is that forget about what your gc says, your grades and scores tell you, and your friends and family advise. there is no sense to who gets accepted or not based on individual stats. it is all in the hands of what someone thinks. now i am not saying that is bad but what bothers me is it is more like hs than i thought! things are so far from what you were always told to do to get into a good school. much more subjective than objective. good for some but for the ones that followed the plan, not so good.

True. Admission is so subjective.

Furthermore.....when people post under "what are my chances" and cc members respond by saying "your stats are too low" or "not definite but almost a sure thing" --- FORGET IT!

Moral of the story: Apply to a few REACH schools, even if your STATS are in the 25% range. And when your STATS put you in the 75% range, the school is still NO safety!

good point. my thought is one safety, at least one match, and the rest reach. cause the odds are you will get into your match but if you don't you have your safety. but my gc did not know what he was talking about with the reaches. his advice could really hurt me!

yea, i was waitlisted today too, and it was definitely a surprise, i thought i had the credentials to get in too and my teachers/counselor thought the same.
It was pretty disappointing (I've been sulking in my room now for an hour (i know thats sad and sounds petty)
I was just wondering if anyone here (or knows of someone) got rejected or waitlisted from WM but got accepted into a school that is thought to be better? I was just wondering, maybe it'll make me feel better..
thanks!
:)

Sorry to hear about that. And way to dig up an old thread, hahaha

What other schools did you apply to? Have you already been accepted to any? Answer those questions and I'll try to help you out.

Edit: This thread is crazy ancient. I don't understand why it's here.

hehe sorry about that :) (i kinda just googled 'waitlisted WM' and got this)
Well lets see:
I applied to UPenn, JHU, Georgetown, UVA, Duke, WM (of course), Mary Washington (backup), George Mason (backup)
I got into Mary Washington and George mason (into their honors colleges..MW accepted me even though a portion of my app didnt get to them (i make myself happy now my reminding myself that :)i know...lame)
Um, my credentials:
3.98 GPA
2090 SAT (i know thats not that great)
BUT I wrote a killer essay (well atleast what my friends and teachers thought)
President of Model United Nations (won many awards)
Do independent research with a doctor from the Children's National Med. Center in DC (for the past 3 yrs.-hopefully it'll be through with and published by this year 'fingers crossed')
To complete my interests in international relations too (i put down pre-med and int.relations) I have been head volunteer for the past 3 yrs. at the center for multicultural and humanitarian services for their child enrichment program (we deal with teaching minorities English and do day care on the side for their kids)
play piano,
3rd chair cellist in chamber orchestra
have recieved the Academic letter award each year in high school for being in the top 10% of the school (my school doesnt do ranking beyond that)
And did the Folger Shakespeare Fellowship down at the DC Folger Shakespeare Library (1 of 15 kids chosen) to further my newfound interest in writing
i have a published article in India Abroad, a prominent indian newspaper, about the media's biased depiction of the status of the caste system in India
whew, ok sorry that was a long and roundabout way to answer your question!
But thank you so much for replying :)

i got waitlisted today too :( is getting waitlisted from W&M a good indicator that i will probablly be waitlisted from UVA too?

Oh man, nikki9, are you kidding me? What excellent choices you have made!

BTW - Full Disclosure: D1 went to UVA, loved it, and I still think it's one of the best places in the country. D3 is obsessed with Duke.

Let me tell you something. I've been to WM several times with the family to visit. We like it for the most part, but there is always a sense that something is a little off. Something about the aggregation of that particular student body. We were there not long ago and were standing outside one of the classroom buildings when classes let out. Let me tell you honestly, it may have been because it was morning, or because the skies were la little gray, but a lot of those kids just looked lifeless and melancholy. D2 who had already applied looked up at me and said, "Whoa, these students are throwing off some bad vibes. They look a little beat down." I thought it was funny what she said because I was thinking the same.

Later, we were in the student center and struck up a conversation with one of the students at the information desk. Same thing. We asked her how she liked it, her impressions, etc. and she said it was a great school blah, blah, but she couldn't wait to graduate because she had become bored outside of classes and the whole Williamburg thing had gotten old. Again, same vibe.

We've also been to some of the other schools you applied to, and I can say without a doubt, they had a much better feel. It wasn't so much what people said as much as what we observed and felt ourselves. The students looked happier, more vibrant, and frankly, a little more attractive.

I won't go into all the details about each school, but let it suffice to say that D2 would be least disappointed if WM was the one that waitlisted her. I mentioned your comments about being sad about getting waitlisted, and D2 just said, "Hey, they probably did her a favor. She'll definitiely be happier at any one of her other schools, even her safeties are pretty cool."

So there you have it. Here's one whole family that visited those schools up close, and we all say you haven't lost much of anything in being waitlisted at WM from what we've seen. Move on and be glad about it. We're not saying WM is not a great school, it is -- just doesn't feel quite right though. You can do better.

You also have some great qualifications!

Hope that helps.

No bbailey not at all. There's no correlation so don't sweat it.

Nikki9

My daughter was waitlisted by W&M in 2006 (when this thread started). She was accepted at UNC (OOS) and Emory.(She was also OOS for W&M) Good luck with your other schools.

thank you so much ThatMom and FLVADad.

FLVADAD, thanks a lot for the support. My mother has been consoling me but when it comes from the family I feel like its too biased of a support and my mom definitely is going 'i told you so' after reading this post :)
I guess the feeling I have is that because I couldn't get into WM that this means I won't getting into those higher ranked schools or similar schools (UPenn, Duke, UVA, Georgetown, JHU ...).
Can there be some correlation between getting waitlisted by WM and rejected by those harder schools? I just don't know anymore its so subjective....
Thank you so much again, you guys made me feel a lot better:)

Nikki i know exactly how you feel. It feels as if it is a bad sign or something. I did not like William and Mary at all it defintaly did feel extremly gloomy and it was not giving off the fun college vibe found at other schools. Even though i was not planning on going there it was definalty a like confidnece killer getting waitlisted. Good luck on the rest of your college search though!

Thanks for the reassurance FLVADAD

No problem. And look, everybody knows that it's pretty tough odds at a lot of colleges this year, so I definitely understand the anxiety. We are going through it too. However, you already said it, it's all very subjective. I would add that it's even a bit irrational. That being the case, please don't spend any time reflecting on WM as possibly being an omen where your other choices are concerned.

You guys have no doubt worked very hard, and from your stats, you are clearly top notch, well rounded applicants. You keep it up and no matter what school is ultimately fortunate enough to get you, you are going to be very successful well beyond the undergraduate level. Always remember, it's not the school that make the students, it's really the quality of the students that make the school. I think it's hilarious that these schools take all the credit for the success of their students when in reality they only accept the type of students who are going to succeed no matter where they attend. It's not like these schools make you so much better (like they advertise). If they did, you would see more of them taking average students and graduating them as great students. Instead, they only start with the very best from the beginning, and then take credit when they succeed. Don't think of it as them giving you the privilege of attending, think of it as you giving them the privilege of having a chance to benefit from your talents. And those so unenlightened as to pass on the opportunity, well, they do it to their own detriment ;).

I know it's not that simple, but my point is that this is really about you, not the school. Just be prepared to work your tail off, meet lots of people, and have a great time wherever you land and you will be just fine -- and very happy.

Sorry for the long post, but I really hate to see such great students put through such a nerve-racking process.

Nikki--i feel like we're the same person!lol
basically the same story....i got waitlisted too :(
i also applied to UVA&JHU and got accepted to UMW honors

i guess we'll find out in a week (ekkk!)
hope it all works out for the best!

Nikki. Sorry about the waitlist. Our daughter (OOS) was waitlisted at W&M in 2005. It was a huge disappointment. She wrote a letter to the admissions person for our region highlighting specifics from her overnight etc and specifics as to why W & M was for her. She was also accepted at UVA but as a legacy so was treated as instate so you can't compare those results. The happy ending is that she was accepted off the waitlist and has had an awesome experience at W&M. Her perceptions and ours do not match some of the less than complimentary reports here.

Don't be disheartened! Being rejected or waitlisted at W&M does not foreshadow the decisions of the other schools, including UVA. I was accepted at both schools. Some of my friends got into W&M and not UVA. Others got into UVA but not W&M. Go figure! I chose W&M and do not regret that decision at all.

I agree with bluejay in that my experience does not parallel other reports here. It is unfortunate that they received those vibes as I don't think they accurately reflect the majority of the student body...ok, maybe the ones who waited and crammed all night for a mid-term and lived to regret it!! :)

Anyway, you will all do very well at whatever school you ultimately choose to attend!
