SURVEY: Social Life During Weekends

Hey I'm looking to apply to UCs next year, but I since I'm coming from far away, I want to have a decent social life; I don't want to be alone with nothing to do. So I was hoping that some of you could answer my questions:

1)Is UCB mostly a commuter school?
2) Are weekends boring?
3) Do students often go home on weekends?
4) If you usually live on campus and don't go home, then what do you do for fun on weekends?
5) About what percentage of freshmen live on campus?
6) About what percentage of undergrads live on campus?

No

Depends on you. Some people study, some people party, some people do both.

Big variation, depends if they’re from the bay. But overall not really.

Eat, hang out, study, go to bars

Most do

Most non-freshmen don’t live in dorms b/c they’re overpriced and overcrowded

1.) Definite no; even people who are from a few miles away live with other students right next to campus.

2.) It depends; there’s plenty of social opportunity out there, but it’s really dependent on your social circle.

3.) Not really; for those from NorCal, they’d go home once every few weeks, heavily dependent on their relationship with their parents.

4.) Hang out with friends, relax, sleep, study, etc. There generally isn’t much to do in terms of “commercial” stuff (i.e. shopping, movies, concerts).

5.) Almost all; the campus pushes it strongly and it’s a great way to ease them onto the heavily competitive do-it-yourself environment.

6.) 75% – non-freshman move out of the dorms once they know people and have had time to find an apartment to share. Dorms cost more than 3x the amount of an apartment with similar accommodations.
