SURVEY: Social Life During Weekends

Hey I'm looking to apply to UCs next year, but I since I'm coming from far away, I want to have a decent social life; I don't want to be alone with nothing to do. So I was hoping that some of you could answer my questions:

1)Is UCSB mostly a commuter school?
2) Are weekends boring?
3) Do students often go home on weekends?
4) If you usually live on campus and don't go home, then what do you do for fun on weekends?
5) About what percentage of freshmen live on campus?
6) About what percentage of undergrads live on campus?

you may wish to know that i am a commuter student. i will tell you first hand that i personally know basically everybody who commutes from family home to campus lol; this is definitely NOT a commuter school

1) it is very much a residential school. most students live on campus, in IV, or in goleta near campus
2) depends on your personality
3) first quarter, yes; but most students after that stick around
4) anything. party, exercise, study, play video games, hang out, etc etc
5) 80-90%. no one really lives at home. it seems that a lot of freshman live in IV though.
6) maybe 30%

I have a question too.

Is it expensive to live on campus?

I’m going to be living in the university apartments and it’s 570 a month. It’s expensive to live in dorms

Btw alphakennybuddy: LOL AT your username. A+

Actually by expensive I meant cost of living; that was my fault sorry.

Also, whats the difference between university apartments and dorms. Aren’t they the same thing? Are university dorms off-campus? Are university apartments owned by the university? Yes, I realize the latter question may be an obvious one, but I’m a bit confused.

@swagga: it’s fine  By cos of living do you mean buying food…and stuff? Dorms and university apartments are owned by the university. Dorms are much more expensive and the rooms are really small! Dorms come with a meal plan so that’s one upside. You can always get a meal plan if you live in university apartments too.

As for buying groceries, it won’t be that expensive. My friend goes to UCSB and gets financial aid And has pocket money left over each quarter. She spends maybe 300 on groceries a quarter which isn’t that bad.

Your username is win. I applaud you AlphaKennyBuddy.

Anyways. . .

1) Nope, far from a commuter school. Most students live <1.5 miles away from campus.

2) Are weekends boring? IT DEPENDS ON HOW YOU MAKE OF THEM <–

3) It wildly varies on how often students go home. When there is an upcoming holiday/long weekend. . .more people than usual go home.

4) Again, anything you please. You’re free from the confines of your home now. Go to the beach, drink a bit, go downtown SB or anywhere else in a friend’s car, etc.

5) Too fried from homework atm to answer. No idea.

6) Read no. 5.

Differences between dorms and university apartments. . .

University apartments are, well, just like any other apartment in the USA, while dorms are, well, dorms.

Similarities & differences being. . .

Both residences are owned by the university. Maintenance is provided and free, and internet/utilities/heating/water/etc. are included in the cost of living.

Dorms do NOT come with kitchens. There are kitchenettes in each floor though. Also, with dorms, it is MANDATORY to be in the meal plan.

Apartments are apartments (for the university apartments, they come fully furnished with the beds, refrigerator, desks, closet space, shelves, table, etc) and you supply yourself with your own food.

If you live in a dorm, maids come in and clean your bathrooms/rooms once every week.

If you live in the apartment. . .the cleanliness of the lair is your own responsibility.

You are left to your own device.

Apartments are approx $5/6K cheaper than the dorms, most likely even more.

RA’s enforce alcohol prohibition in dorms. In the apartments. . .what enforcement?

That’s enough word vomit for now. BRB
