SURVEY: Social Life During Weekends

Hey I’m looking to apply to UCs next year, but I since I’m coming from far away, I want to have a decent social life; I don’t want to be alone with nothing to do. So I was hoping that some of you could answer my questions:

1)Is UCD mostly a commuter school?
2) Are weekends boring?
3) Do students often go home on weekends?
4) If you usually live on campus and don’t go home, then what do you do for fun on weekends?
5) About what percentage of freshmen live on campus?
6) About what percentage of undergrads live on campus?

**1)Is UCD mostly a commuter school? **
I’d guess that the vast majority of housing in Davis consists of apartment buildings and townhouses, from that and from experience I’d say no - the vast majority of people I know from class live in Davis (in a shared apartment or something).

**2) Are weekends boring? **
Nope, I don’t even know how that’d be a problem, it’s like living just about anywhere else.

3) Do students often go home on weekends?
I’ve only been here since fall, so my experience is limited, but I think it depends on where you live: Lots of people I know that live within an hour or two of their family go home at least 2 weekends out of the month. That’s about it? The town is pretty busy most weekends.

4) If you usually live on campus and don’t go home, then what do you do for fun on weekends?
I don’t live on campus… my family and I live in Davis! I usually have lots to keep me busy on the weekends, but if all else fails I’ll just do homework or sit around online… or go bowling. Summer break should get interesting since I’m still here xD

5) About what percentage of freshmen live on campus?
Lots.

6) About what percentage of undergrads live on campus?
Most people that live on campus are freshmen, but I know someone that was living in Primero Grove as a 3rd year and they were enjoying it just fine.

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to dorm the first year to have a social life - lots of my transfer friends shared apartments and seem to have had a great time (although some moved during the year XD). That said, it helps to share a place with others (because college students are too busy to go visit their friends during the quarter!) and not live with your family xD

Even if you do end up with a living arrangement like mine it’s ok though, you meet a lot of people and plenty of them are in the same town - it’s just a matter of having the time to goof off. I dunno how most people do it, between errands and classes and other stuff I’m usually too busy to go out much.

From what I’ve noticed, lots of people identify their best friends as people they dormed with during their first year and spend most of their time ‘hanging out’ with people they live with. Admittedly after hearing that I sometimes feel like I’m dealing with social life like as if I’m on the outside of a glass box XD oh well.

shrug  Hope that answered some of your questions!

Depends what you mean by “commuter school”. Most non-freshmen live off campus, but almost everyone lives within a couple mile radius of campus.

Only as boring as you are. As long as you have a group of friends you’ll find things to do.

A lot of people on my floor did, but usually not my close friends who I would hang out with. The people who went home tended not to be the partying type.

Parties, skiing/snowboarding/boating trips, club events, random shows/concerts/events/art galeries, bon fires at the arboretum, eating downtown, bowling, trips to Sacramento or the surrounding area, paintball. Get creative.

Ninety-something percent.

Probably around 25 percent. Freshmen and transfers are generally on campus their first year. Then there are on-campus apartments and RAs.

1)Is UCD mostly a commuter school?
Nope, since there are students who either live on campus or within Davis. Even on weekends, there’s something going on at UCD

2) Are weekends boring?
Depends on you as a person. If you think of yourself as a boring person, then weekends will be boring.

3) Do students often go home on weekends?
Depends on where they live. People whose home is in SoCal don’t go home on weekends, but people who live nearby (usually a max of 2-3 hours away) choose whether they want to go home on weekends or not.

4) If you usually live on campus and don’t go home, then what do you do for fun on weekends?
I hang out with my roommates, play video games, have movie nights, etc.

5) About what percentage of freshmen live on campus?
I think almost all freshmen live on campus, with the exception of those who would rather live in an apartment (and even then, there are on-campus apartments).

6) About what percentage of undergrads live on campus?
A small percentage, as after their first year in the dorms, transfers and freshmen usually live in an off-campus apartment. There are on-campus apartments, though, such as The Colleges at La Rue, Russell Park Apartments, and The Atrium.
