Sushant's SAT 2 Chem Prep Journal!

hey so this is my first one. I am prepping for the SAT chem for June 7th. I took 1 practice test without time just to see how well i do to set it as a benchmark. I am only using the Princeton Review book for now. It offers 3 tests so i used one. I got a 670 on and i think thats okay. I am aiming for 750+ on the real thing so lets see how it goes. On my first test, i answered 74 of them. Had 56 correct, 18 incorrect, raw score = 51.5 = 52 = 670. I got almost all of the Because problems so i gotta work on those. I made flash cards for every fact i didnt know. I made about 35 so far. Probably gona be 40 by the time im done. Wish me good luck. Practice test 2 might be tomorrow. Anyone is welcome to join this journal for prep purposes.

hrmm. should I only mark cards for the questions I get wrong on the tests or even my freaking review questions?

depends, if you dont know some of the important equations by heart, then you should. But you should know them by heart if you took AP chemistry. Did you? I know equations but i forget some really annoying little nitpicky facts like iodine is gray-ish purple when subliming. So i put them onto the flashcards. Facts that you must commit to knowledge because on questions like them, u cant really eliminate, u either know it or not. Some things like gasses, you can sometimes eliminate some choices by simply knowing that R=.082 when P= atm.. suppose that they put pv=nRt, and they say P=.7atm, and R=8.31... u can eliminate that.. well ya, you get the idea, so i put "you either know it or not" facts on flashcards. But something else might work for you.

oh and i get those facts from the review questions.. as in, the questions i messed up on that involved those facts...

Put everything you don't know 100% by memory on your flash cards. But I only had like 25 flashcards total because I cram a lot. If you like to separate most stuff out make as many as you want! :P

I was wondering how much organic chemistry needs to be known? In Barron's, there are 20 pages dedicated to this, but on practice tests from PR and Kaplans, I get around 1-2 questions max for organic.

ya, organic chem isnt big. I remembered the basic stuff like alkanes, alkenes, keytones, etc before the AP exam. Just look over them

lawl. well I didn't take AP chem...............

There was like NO organic chem on my test.

It's good to know the nomenclature and the basic compounds. Know that organic = Carbon and Hydrogen for the most part. Know basic groups like alcohols, etc. SparkNotes has a nice section that is more than enough coverage of it, but not overwhelming.

OMG i did it! okay so i just took the practice test 2 in the PR book. heres how i did. i answered 79. Got 72 correct, 7 incorrect. raw score = 70.25 = 70 = 750!!! yesss.

Awesome. You're scoring just like I did on PR - just below 700 on test one, and much better on the 2nd one :)

hehe hopefully my score on the real thing will be just as good as ures. So, i ll probably take test 3 in PR book in a coupla days.

okay, so i ll start making more flashcards soon from practice test 2.. and for pt3, i ll shoot for an 800.

Also, reading through the book a 2nd time (at least a week or two afterwards) is helpful, as you usually pick up on things you missed the first time.

Kind of like when you read a novel twice...the second time you notice stuff that you didn't the first :)

hey. are those flashcard things really helping? what do you write down, can yo ugive a photo example of the problem and your index card thing

the flashcards helped somewhat. The 2 flashcards from practice test 1 that helped me the most for test 2 were as following(no scanner, sorry):
Side 1 = What does a small Ka indicate?
Side 2 = A weak Acid
This one helped me get about 3 or 4 right on the test 2
and heres another
Side 1 : How are Volume, Temperature, and Pressure similar?
Side 2 : Volume is proportionate to temp, Volume is inversely proportionate to Pressure.
This helped me get a couple right. Other than these 2, there were a couple that helped me a bit.

should I save all my practice tests for the end? or Should I take one now to see where I am after reviewing half the book?

Take them constantly and spread them out. I'll try to scan in a couple of my flashcards.

ya i took the first one to set as a benchmark and i got a 670. I didnt really study or read the book after that first one. I just went over the problems i didnt know how to do on that first practice test and made flashcards. Then took another and bam 750. So i hope after making more flashcards and review, ill get an 800 on the last PR. I have a question, should i be answering all the questions??

You definitely should aim for that. Only skip it if you can't eliminate a single choice.
