Switching major in Purdue

Hi, my son got in to Purdue Engineering and excited about it. What I have heard that kids change their mind after being 1-2 years in college. So any existing Purdue students/their parents can tell me that if this trend is in Purdue too. What are the percentage of student switch majors in Purdue from Engineering and how hard/easy the process is? Thank you in advance.

Difficulty of changing majors would vary based on how full the intended destination major is.

Purdue calls changing major CODO (change of degree objective). So search for “Purdue CODO [intended destination major]” to see how difficult each possible destination major would be to change into.

Unless you are trying to change into CS, nursing, or flight it is usually straight forward to change out of engineering (not so easy to change in). You can search for Purdue closed programs and get the list of programs.

FWIW Purdue engineering has a high retention rate. We My D knows only one person who switched out of engineering after freshman year and there were only a handful I heard about on our parent group which has over 2600 members.

Thank you so much for your reply. Guessing by his interest he might want to switch into Business or CS. I just wanted he should have choices if he doesn’t like what he got into . May I ask what your D does in Purdue and which year? Thanks again.

@ucbalumnus Thank you.

CS in CoS will be a tough transfer. Business, not so much.

My D is a junior studying chemical engineering. Happy to answer any questions you may have about engineering at Purdue!

Thank you!

80%+ of the graduates from the FYE classes of 2014 and 2015 graduated from the Engineering college. The 2016 class is at 86%, with about 30% of the initial class still enrolled due to co-ops, etc.
