Hi, my son applied to Rice to the scool of social sciences and an econ major and expressed interest in also studying math and physics. Can somebody comment on how difficult it might be for him to change his major to math and minor in econ? Thanks.
Just returned from their overview and tour. We did one about a year ago and she wanted to refresh. They said other than Shepherd’s school of music and the Architecture you are accepted into Rice University. You do not have to decide major until Sophomore year and can switch majors from what you said with no problem.
@wshsmom is correct. He should just make sure to keep his options open by taking the intro classes for all of the majors he’s considering. That shouldn’t be hard, especially with regards to the Math classes. Plus, Econ is in D2 (social sciences distribution area) and math and physics are in D3 (STEM distribution area), so whichever he chooses, he will at least be fulfilling multiple distribution area requirements. Sorry if that’s confusing how I explained it, feel free to ask any more questions!
I’m also curious about this topic - is it difficult to switch into engineering? I’m on the fence between the School of Natural Sciences and School of Engineering.
I was about to agree with the second person who answered and then realized it was me haha! Not difficult to switch, into engineering, see the response I just posted to this question: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/rice-university/1791066-chances-for-ed-will-chance-back-thanks-in-advance.html
People often straddle different distribution areas (Rice lingo for STEM vs arts/humanities vs social sciences) before declaring. My roommate definitely did!
