Switching Majors at UCLA! Please Help!!! I am freaking out!!!

I was currently admitted to UCLA as an undeclared physical science major at the college of Letters and Sciences. At the time when I was filling out my application I was very much undecided in my major choice and therefore put undecided on my application. However, I have always had a love for engineering. I am currently in Calculus BC and AP Physics and I enjoy the material very much. I was wondering how hard would it be to switch from letters and sciences to the college of engineering. From what I hear, it is extremely difficult if not impossible. I plan to do this as soon as I get to UCLA and if this doesn't work out do you think applied math would be a viable option to pursue for an undergrad degree and going for a masters in engineering. Any feedback is appreciated. This really scares me!

Me too. Is it possible to switch from chemistry to biology?

As long as they haven’t changed how orientation works, you can change majors within a college easily. Not sure about changing majors into another college.

By the way, chemistry and biology are two very different majors. You should do some research on what the undergraduate majors entail (chemistry requires quantum mechanics, biology is a very diverse major, etc.).

Switching from chem to bio is easy. Switching between colleges is doable. I know someone who switched during their 1st quarter from some kind of life science into engineering. I’d recommend emailing the engineering counselor or something.

Do you know what was the process of switching from L&S to the college of engineering. And also do you know what engineering major your friend switched to?

Follow the procedure posted in the link. It’s good they’ve formalized and documented it these days. Even better is that petitions are accepted every quarter so you’re not wasting a while year on a path that may not pan out. Just keep that gpa high

My son is in the same predicament…accepted to College of Letters/Science with Applied Math major and now wants Civil Engineering. My understanding is you must take two math/two science classes maintain a 3.5 GPA and apply for the engineering college after completion of two quarters and it’s not a problem. His dilemma should he go to the other colleges that have already said they’d allow him to switch to engineering or roll the dice he can get the 3.5 GPA and then change his major at UCLA. Hope this helps.
