So I already applied to UCLA as a freshman and submitted all my applications and everything and applied as an undeclared Letters and Science major. Should I be admitted to UCLA, am I completely screwed to change my major to Materials Engineering? I had a complete change of heart as to what I want to do as an occupation/major in but I think it's a little too late for me.. :'(
If I gain admission to UCLA undeclared Letters and Sciences is there no way for a freshman to do anything to major in Materials Engineering in the Engineering campus since they don't offer Materials Science in L&S?

It’s not very difficult to switch from L&S to engineering.

Wait really?? I was under the impression that it’s easy to switch majors WITHIN the college you gain admission to (ei;letters and science, samueli engineering) but almost impossible to hop between different college campuses within UCLA. Have I been misinformed or do you have a link where I can gain more information of this? Thanks so much for your reply btw.

That’s the case for transfer students, but it is easier for freshman to do it.

For any other engineering major I’d say it’s hard, but Materials is a small major so I think they might be more willing to accept your change of major request.
Either way, they would only allow you to switch if your academic record is good enough. For example, if you had applied to Materials Eng. in the first place and you would have gotten accepted, then you will likely be able to switch to it; and vice versa.

Bottom line: You cannot apply to an easy major just to get into UCLA, then switch to a harder major. Everyone thinks there’s a loophole here, but there isn’t.

When you first get to UCLA, go to the engineering counseling office (6426 Boelter Hall) and get a change of major/school petition. You’ll have to fill it out and do a short writeup on why you want to switch (something like a page double spaced). Usually what will happen is they’ll wait for your grades on math/science classes for a quarter or two, and if they are decent, you’ll switch successfully.

From the info on the web page, you’ll have to wait until spring of your frosh year to apply. See [Change of Majors; UCLA Engineering Office](http://www.seasoasa.ucla.edu/undergraduates/change-of-majord)

Thanks so much guys for the extremely valuable info. Well my science grades are very high as well as my test scores are easily my strongest point by far. However my math is slightly deficient. Although I am in calculus AP and I have been in the highest math classes all my life I average a mixed A/B average yet all my other classes are straight A’s every time so math I would say is my slightly lower subject and engineering being all math I think I’m going to have to work extremely hard to push my B+s up to As and hopefully I’ll get there. It’s not like I’m dumb in math, it’s just I get B’s in calculus and above mathematics which I know is pathetic for an engineering major.
