switching majors at UCLA

is it possible to change your major after getting into UCLA?

Yes. But only within your department.

As in within the college of letters and science, right?

No, as in within the deparment of math and physical sciences located within L&S. Not department to deparment within L&S.

Its certainly possible to transfer interdepartmentally. But your chances are much lower.

what exactly do you need to do?

Would it be hard to switch from biology to biochemistry? Biology is in the life science department and biochemistry is in the chemistry department. =(

i wanted to switch from sociology to comm... had all the prereqs already completed for comm and a damn strong gpa too... i just thought that sociology was the major for me when i applied :(

You can change from department to department!

Some departments just will not allow it.

Any department with an impacted major will not allow the change.

Comm is impacted- if you do not get accepted directly into Comm you will not major in comm.
Sociology is not impacted.

does this mean that If I get accepted as a bizecon major (impacted) and find that it's not for me, I can switch to a sociology major (non-impacted) ?

Furthermore, if I didn't declare a 2nd major is there of a possibility of double majoring? I'm really interested in sociology...

Yes you can double major

Yes you can change from impacted to non impacted
you just cant change to an impacted- not from an impacted.

To double major in BizEcon + Sociology you would need to

Complete preqs for both
Complete two upper division courses in each major
Go to Murphy Hall and see a councelor /file petition for double major and then your Degree Progress Report (DPR) will be updated to reflect both majors.

You MUST be able to complete both majors within 216 units- or within 2 years of transferring.

So if you go over 2 years you will have to abide by 216 units, if you can do it within 2 years and get out but go over your units they will allow it- but you have to get approval first.

You can not declare a second major at application time- you can declare an alternate but UCLA doesnt look at alternate majors unless you are TAP certified. You should apply to whichever major is impacted if you want to double major in one that is impacted and one that is not.

Thanks malishka once again! You sure know your stuff!
