I was accepted early action into the college of social sciences and humanities for poli sci in the honors program. I have been switching between history and poli sci and I am not 100% decided on what I would like to pursue. How difficult is it to switch majors in a single college at Northeastern?
Thanks:)

Very easy. Just tell your advisor at orientation that you’d like to look into taking history classes.

One thing you can also do is check out the Poli Sci requirements and figure out which ones you might be interested in taking:
http://www.northeastern.edu/registrar/courses/cat1112-acad-sh-pols.pdf

A lot of courses in that area (especially electives) should also count as history, so you could at the very least get a minor.

Just a note- History is a pretty easy major to finish. Not to say the classes are easy or anything, just that there aren’t that many required classes you NEED to take. (Requirements: http://www.northeastern.edu/registrar/courses/cat1112-acad-sh-hist.pdf) For example a BS in history actually requires you to get a minor in a different subject. So I’d personally advise to stick it out at least for your first semester in Poli Sci. Then if you hate the classes you’ll still have plenty of time to do History. Whereas if you start in History, you’ll be off cycle with all of the Poli Sci kids. Kind of annoying.

The only times switching majors is difficult are if

1) You are changing colleges (ex: CCIS to CBA). Then you have to go through the Internal Transfer Program. Some of the really popular colleges/majors are pretty tough to get into. Switching into Nursing in famous for being nearly impossible (you have to convince a committee of nurses that your life goal is to be the best nurse you can be… despite the fact that you clearly didn’t think so before else you wouldn’t be in a different major).

2) You try to transfer too late in your studies, and you won’t be able to finish the major you actually want. This is really important for Business, Engineering, CCIS, and a lot of the sciences- which all tend to have very strict laid out schedules everyone needs to follow or risk falling behind.

3) You want to go into a program that doesn’t accept transfers. Like Pharmacy. In which case, oh well. You can’t.
