I recently confirmed my enrollment at UMD..however i am having second thoughts about my major choice!!

I put down one LEP on my application...but sorta wanna switch to another major (which is LEP also)

and if this is relevant at all..i am in gemstone and have a banneker/key scholarship...are they more likely to let me switch before the fall semester?

Hopefully you’ll get some better information from a current student. My sense (from when my daughter applied last year) is that it’s much easier to switch your major now than it would be to do it after school starts - as long as you’re qualified for the new major. She switched from math (non-LEP) to business (LEP). My impression was that since she was in Honors, they would let her into pretty much whatever major she wanted at that early date. Being a Banneker/Key scholar, you out-rank my daughter, so I think if you just contact someone in the major you want to switch to, they would be happy to take care of it for you. (Last year, my daughter worked with someone in the business school - not admissions - to get her major changed to business, but I can’t guarantee you that’s the way you’re supposed to do it.)

Yes, you can switch, and yes, it matters that you’re Honors/Banneker Key/etc.

My friend switched majors (bounced around from one LEP to another, out of LEP, back into LEP, etc.) like a gazillion times before school started. He was also a strong candidate, though not a Banneker recipient…I think they will wait on you hand and foot this early in the game ;).

My impression also is that it is easier to switch this Spring and summer, and will become increasingly difficult as school progresses (if it is even possible that late without going through the regular admissions process that other internal transfers must do). Do it now if you wanna do it. Good luck.

Is the Government and Politcs major an LEP? Because I applied undecided but I’ve since gravitated towards being a Govt. and Politics major… Can I just email the school and they make this happen? If not them who would I email?

How is it to change from one school of Engineering to another? My son is enrolled in Mechanical Engineering, but also toying with the idea of going to Electrical/Computer. I understand that change can be made even as late as fal of sophomore year. Any ideas?

switching within engineering is ridiculously easy. For the most part, i think most of the work is done through submitting a quick form online but you might need to follow up w/ engineering advising or something though.
