I applied to GW this year and was accepted! Unfortunately I did something kinda stupid on my application. I said I wanted to go to the new Corcoran school of art as my primary, because if you did that, you were eligible for a big scholarship, but what i really wanted to do was attend Elliott for International Economics and double in photography at Corcoran. I put Elliott as my secondary school. Only thing is that my parents want me to have Elliott as my main school/major and I had thought you got a decision from both when applying. Would I be able to switch or add Elliott immediately or would I need to wait for a semester? Or does it not even matter as the beginning if freshman year is a lot of core classes and such? Also, the corcoran school has a lower tuition than the rest of GW, does that mean if i wanted to add Elliott and be a part of both schools, would I have to pay more? On a side note, do you guys think its feasible to double major in these two very unrelated fields? I have a ton of APs, would that help? And finally, if anyone is familiar with the Corcoran school, I would love to talk to you! GW seems very discombobulated when it comes to the new addition!
I think this is the kind of thing you should take up with someone on the staff at GW.
On your side note, double majors in unrelated fields are frequently possible. But it may require additional time beyond 4 years. We were told at Alfred University that a double major in art and engineering would be 5 years plus.
Usually I would say wait it out for a semester or two and switch (because you’re right, there are a lot of general courses to take as a freshman). However, I don’t know how the Corcoran works since we didn’t have it when I attended. With you saying that it costs different makes me think that it’s an entirely different animal and switching between the two might be difficult once at school. I agree with @MidwestDad3 in that you should speak to someone in the admissions office right away.
