Question about changing majors as a junior: I"m currently a philosophy major, but I want to switch to poli sci. I don't have any of the prereqs for poli sci, but between the 5 quarters I have left and a summer session I would have enough time to complete the major. The thing is, on the poli sci site, it says something like "Transfers: must finish prereqs are community college before being admitted," and I'm not sure if that applies to actually getting into UCLA under poli sci, or if they mean that's the only way a transfer could be admitted to the major. Also, I'd need 4 lower-div prereqs, and I'm not sure if it'd be risky to work that many lower divs into my schedule as a junior? I'd feel so behind and unproductive, but at the same time, I really want to be a political science major. Thanks for any help!

Transfer students must be admitted as Pre-Political Science majors
in order to major in Political Science. Effective Fall 2009, students may not change their major to Pre-Political Science if they were originally admitted to another major.

You can’t change your major to PoliSci, but I do think you can add it as a second major. See a counselor to see if you can do this under your max unit limit. Have you considered adding the PoliSci minor instead?

^ This. You cannot “switch” per se but you can apply as double w/polisci and later drop your primary major if you wish.

You can also only apply if you’ve finished all your requirements at your previous college.

You should talk to the PS dept. counselor.

Ouch, okay, thank you!

Also, ioi, could you possibly provide the link for the website where you found that please? I’m also considering switching to comm studies (which would involve taking summer session in 2011, bleh), and I want to check to see if there’s the same stipulation for that major as well. Thank you!

I transferred as a History major to UCLA this fall, and I had all my pre-reqs for History and Poli Sci done during my time of transfer. I was unable to switch my major to a political science major however because they are not accepting new majors. However this may have changed in the past few months, but I highly doubt it. I would talk to the department head and see, but it was near impossible for me to do it even when I had all the pre-reqs done beforehand and this was only a few months ago.

you sure have a thing for impacted majors haha.

if you can’t get into poli sci, it’s even more doubtful that you’ll get into CoSt. the avg gpa for Cost is like a 3.9, for polisci i think it’s only 3.7
