How is Syracuse's, particularly Newhouse's, reputation in New York? I know that many alum live and work in New York. Does that make Syracuse look better or worse on a resume?

Any input would be appreciated!

I rarely frequent this message board as my children are no longer in college but happened to visit it today. Since my daughter graduated from Newhouse 5 and 1/2 years ago I can give you some information on what happened to my daughter and her friends from Newhouse in NYC. My daughter is a very successful journalist in NYC. When she applied for internships during college and when she first graduated the Newhouse name helped her, as she was hired by Newhouse alumni. At this point it no longer matters where she went to school. All of her friends who attended Newhouse have been very successful in creative fields. My daughter could have attended a more highly rated school than Syracuse but they gave her a merit scholarship which served to recruit her. The Newhouse name is very respected in NYC.

The fact that many alumni live and work in NYC can only help a Newhouse graduate, as they are potential contacts. You must be proactive and prove yourself to make it in the communications field. No one will reach out to you and recruit you. But the Newhouse name has proven to be an asset to my daughter and her friends.

I would not choose Newhouse over a program like Medill at Northwestern, an ivy league school, or a top liberal arts college. There are plenty of successful people in media who never studied communications but went to highly rated colleges. But Newhouse was an excellent professional choice for my daughter and she has always been proud to be a Newhouse alumni.

Okay that’s great news. Thank you!

Newhouse is typically ranked the number one communications school in the world and has an 8.7% acceptance rate. That’s lower than the rates of MIT, Brown, Dartmouth, Upenn, Amherst, University of Chicago, and duke. So, i’d say it has a pretty good reputation, and it’s still growing. It’s the best of the best

@RicMatthews Proud SU alum here, but the December 2013 issue of NewsPro has a ranking of J schools and Newhouse is now ranked number four, after Mizzou, Northwestern, and the University of Georgia. If I recall correctly, NewsPro had ranked Newhouse number one a few years ago. This is part of a disturbing trend in which SU’s rankings, with the notable exception of the Maxwell School, have dropped in the last few years.
