Syracuse Theater questions

Question from a HS Junior. If a student applies to the Acting BFA program at Syracuse and is rejected, might they then be accepted into their BA Theater/Acting program? If so, does the applicant have to request this back-up position, or, if deemed qualified, is it automatically granted? Second, do BA acting students attend different classes than the BFA students? Thanks

Brian, I think I can answer this, based on what I learned when I took my D to visit last fall.
Everyone who is accepted into the Syracuse program is basically accepted into the BFA track. At the end of sophomore year, the students undergo jury evaluations in which their teachers decide if they can continue on the BFA track, giving them access to higher level acting/musical theater classes (depending on whether they are straight actors or MTs.) Those who do not pass those juries (I think they are given two chances) must continue in the BA track. However, we also were told that some students peel off from the BFA track themselves, as they find themselves getting interested in taking liberal arts classes in other subjects. So, to make a long story longer :), I don't think getting accepted into the BA track (rather than BFA) as a freshman is an option. As to whether the BA students attend different acting classes, well, perhaps someone else can answer that. I just know that those who do not pass their sophomore juries will not have access to some of the more intense, higher level acting classes.

Thanks NotMamaRose. Syracuse is number one on our list, as 'tuition exchange' is automatic if accepted into any program. I am assuming that applying ED will increase my S's chances. We would have liked to attend their summer theater program, but their dates clash with our vacation plans. Appied to summer programs at Rutgers, BU, NCARTS, and Flying Swamn instead. Thanks again.

The Syracuse summer theatre program was cancelled for this summer anyway, so it's a good thing you didn't apply!

Hello everyone. I was accepted into the BFA Acting program at SU and am entering next month in August for Fall 2013! I’m very excited. I know SU has great opportunities such as studying abroad in London and performing at the Shakespeare Globe theatre, and also the Tepper Semester in NYC, but other than those two, do SU performers get good exposure to professionals in the business?
