I'm interested in majoring in communications and I'm having trouble selecting a school. I'm leaning towards going into advertising (namely creating television commercials) but I'd like to learn about the other areas also. So far I've gotten into the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse with a $6000 a year scholarship (it's not much but it's something) and UNC.

I'm waiting to hear back from BU and Texas. I'm in-state for Texas and I'm aware that they have a very good communications school. Both my parents are UT alumni and my parents would like me to go there. They don't really know much about other schools aside from Texas, so they're unaware of the fact that my other options are pretty solid. I'm know that BU has a very highly regarded communications school and that boston is a great area to make connections.

We don't qualify for financial aid and my parents have said they're willing to help me pay for whatever I choose.

My question is, if you were in my position, where would you be most inclined to go and why?

Thanks for your help, it's nice to get an outsiders perspective on the situation.

That's a tough call. I don't really think you can go wrong with those options. I'd probably go to BU if it was me.

I'd choose Syracuse. The Newhouse School is world renowned, and a scholarship is always good.

I know that you'll feel pressured to choose UT Austin, which is a great school, but studies have shown that kids do better and delevop a better sense of responsibility if they go away to college. I think it would benefit you more to go with your gut feeling, rather than trying to please your parents.

Alright thanks for that. It's a pretty tough call overall. I like that UNC and UT are really well rounded, but it seems like the program at Syracuse is pretty much the cream of the crop. BU is also up there, so I'm pretty torn.

I think BU is known for their communications college.

I would pick UNC,..then UT-Austin :P
But that is just me

Don't outrule Texas just because it's close to home - I don't know what studies the above poster is talking about. That's ridiculous. By dorming at UT-Austin and coming home only for breaks, you will develop the same sense of responsibility that you'll gain at your East Coast schools.

I really think they all have solid programs. Is cost a factor? I know I was swayed to choose a cheaper school, because it would greater afford me opportunities to do unpaid internships over the summer, rather than work my ass off for money to pay for a 50K/yr education. Being in advertising, actual internship and work experience will be important, and your starting salary probably won't be huge. Ask all of your schools about internship and job placement and etc. Syracuse's Newhouse school is really pretty impressive in that regard, but I think all of them will do a decent job of giving you a solid foundation.

Lastly, you have a wide range - warm schools, cold schools, city schools, big school spirit schools...where do you fit in best? Can you arrange a trip to the East Coast to visit these places? They're all so different!

Anyway, good luck :D. You have good choices. If I were in your shoes, if you're not set on advertising I would attend UNC or UT. Those offer great educations outside of that major, too, whereas Syracuse is a bit dodgy in that aspect, and BU certainly isn't worth the extra money.

Cost isn't really a factor, but of course the difference between an in-state school and a private school is pretty huge. I have a 7 year old sister and I don't really want my college choice to affect her future. That being said, my parents have told me that they'll help support me with whatever I choose. I like all of the schools for different reasons, I just have to decipher which reasons are most important to me. I've been a Texas Longhorns fan since I was born (once again, both my parents are UT alums) but I don't want this to necessarily cloud my judgement. I want to choose the school that will offer me the most opportunities, because I think I'll be happy more or less anywhere I attend. Is the cost of going to UNC out of state worth it? BU? Syracuse?

UNC OOS is still very cheap, and it is gives a great bang for your buck even if aren't an instate. The same could be said about UTexas.
