Hi guys, I know many people that absolutely detest Taft, I have read many posts on CC explaining how miserable they are in Taft. I even have friends in real life who were accepted, and when they toured the school they really disliked it. On the other hand, i've read on CC people that love Taft. Why is there this love hate relationship in Taft?

Who dares hate Taft? My interviewer was so nice.

I know more people who have left Taft than any other boarding school. HOWEVER, I also know that it is consistently one of the most applied to schools from my daughter’s school every year, and is on the absolute top of many kids’ lists.
In all instances of the kids I know who have left, it just wasn’t the right fit. It’s hard to blame a school that has so much going for it on the fact that maybe some kids would be better placed somewhere else! And honestly I think that probably exists in every boarding school…and every school…

@enemyofthesun who did you interview with?

As a current Taft student, I agree with kittenygoodness. There are people who don’t like it, but I think it’s more of the “the grass is always greener” attitude. People probably came in with the mindset that prep school would be like year long summer camp, or sitting on the grass, laughing with your friends all day. (which, to be fair, is what a lot of viewbooks depict) However, if you come in with the correct expectations that it isn’t going to be a free-for-all and that you will be challenged, you’ll be fine.

Wanted to chime in that Every Single boarding school has a share of kids who hate it there. Gasp! Even Andover and Exeter!!! Maybe kids feel more free to be honest about their positive and negative experiences there because their school is not part of some cutesy acronym. I would not worry to much about what strangers on the internet think.

Being a teenager in high school is really hard. Boarding school is really difficult in ways that we never discuss on this board. Annecdotes are not statistics. It actually does not matter whether you know 4 people who hated Taft and seven people who loved it. The only question is whether it might be the right place for YOU. Investigate!

@putnamehere: I don’t remember really…but he’s a history teacher and a coach. I remember his face too, but there’s no option for doodle on CC :(

Taft is a great school with a strong community feeling. There are students at all schools who may not decide to stay all four years.

I think that if you liked it, then you can assess the situation and see if it’s the right school for YOU People have different opinions, and even if a school is good, doesn’t mean it will be the right fit for everyone.

Taft is a really great school. I’ve meet the Head of Admission and he is EQUALLY awesome.
It’s just the fact that different people may have different experiences. Unfortunately, you know these people and that’s why you think Taft is a bad school.
Anyway, it’s not, none of any boarding school is. :)

@enemy was it Mr. Murphy? I have been in touch with him a lot because of my hockey

I’m sure it is a very good school. I’ve talked to the representative at an event and they seemed really nice. I agree that it depends on the person, but it seems like a great place.
