The TAG program guarantees you admission to YOUR select UC (excluding UCLA i believe) with a minimal GPA of 3.4. Why don't people just take the easier route and go to community college rather than try hard in highschool. The requirements in the TAG program are all manageable and could be done in 2 years, and as some of you may know, you'll also be saving about 30 grand for the 2 years learning the general ed. you'd learn at the UC. In essence, a person that tried very hard and had to beat out competitors with 4.0+ GPA and solid extracurriculars got into UCI. The person using the TAG program not only saved money but attended the same university.

Lots of people do - Self motivated kids do this all the time. Some for financial reasons, others weren’t ready to leave home, others don’t value the ‘4 year experience’ - dorm living, etc. Both paths are viable and THOUSANDS do both every year.

You will find though, that many community colleges are crowded and getting required courses each semester can be difficult. It is also harder to get straight As in college - particularly if they slacked off in high school and didn’t develop good study habbits. There are many distractions that can side track you along the way. The reality is, at most community colleges, few kids transfer to UCs after 2 years. Some schools, like SBCC work closely with neighboring UCs and make the transfer process smoother. At others, you are on your own.

There’s a lot of great data here:

it will show where students transfer from a particular CC. If you dig, you can also find ‘success’ rates for each California CC.

Also, the TAG GPA threshold can vary year to year based on the number of seats. Really competitive schools for freshmen are also competitive for Jr transfers.

Thank you for your answer. However, I have friends in CC, and they say CC is a whole lot easier than highschool. Those that recieved 3.0’s now say they recieve A’s way easier and a whole lot more in Community college. Those stats from the link are very … weird. This is why I’m trying to spread the awareness of TAG so the CC kisd can be informed. Sure there could be distractions as in not being around the top tier kids, but if you find someone who is also as motivated as you, it is pretty easy to attend UCI and such.
