S may not be working regular full-time hours this summer, so a friend suggested he look into courses at our local SUNY to perhaps get a math or other requirement out of the way. Anyone know if there would be a problem with GW accepting credit? Am wondering what department we would call to ask.

He should be able to get credit but you definitely need to check with the school. I would start with his schools’ (Elliott, Duques, etc) advising department although they likely direct you to the registrar’s office or the department for which you will be seeking the transfer credit.

My D did this the summer after her freshman year. A few things to know - I believe the department head needs to approve that the class is an acceptable replacement for the course at GW. There was a short form, and she needed to submit the course synopsis to get it signed. There is a limit to how many transfer credits you can do, it was maybe 3 courses total for the 4 years.

I am taking 3 courses right now. They need prior approval by each department and by Columbian. at the meantime, go ahead and register and in the worst case scenario you withraw without penalty -if the class didnt start of course.
I am fisishing my general curriculum by doing this at a much lower cost (100/credit vs 1000/credit)

Thanks. I left a message at Elliott today and am hoping they’ll let us know. It would be nice if S2 could get a math or science covered and allow him a little breathing room later on. His older brother’s school was extremely strict about outside classes, and would allow them only if pre-approved and taken BEFORE freshman year. Once the student matriculated, no more outside summer classes allowed, from anywhere.

Also, we were looking at Elliott requirements, and I don’t recall seeing a freshman writing course. Hope they offer (or require) one.
