Taking A201 and X201 this spring

So my first semester ended up like this:

BUS-A 100: A
BUS-K 201: A-
BUS-X 255: A
BUS-X 220: A
PSY-P 101: A
FOLK-F 101: A- (I still can't believe this!)
BUS-X 104: A

Not my ideal results considering I think I had a pretty manageable schedule, but at least I probably won't have to worry about the 3.7 requirement to apply for honors this summer. What I am worried about is if I am taking on too much for next semester. Right now I have:

BUS-A 201
BUS-X 201
BUS-X 255
POLS-Y 305 (Non-Kelley upper-level, I have good reason to not think this will be a problem)
FOLK-F 252
HPER-T 112 (3 credits of an easy A)

Next Fall I am looking to complete my I-core pre-reqs with:

ECON-E 370
BUS-L 201
BUS-G 202
BUS-A 202
BUS-X 204

I could switch X-204 with either A-201 or X-201 to try to maximize my GPA for honors application this summer, but that would make an already brutal schedule next fall, even more brutal. My plan for this summer is to take E-201, E-202, M119, and M118 at community college. I guess I could take A-201 instead of E-202 this summer, and take
X-204 this spring. But of course a lot of the high-grading sections of X-204 are already full. Also, just out of personal preference, I would rather take the honors version of X-204 next fall because I want to do well in the Target Case.

Any thoughts? Which one (A-201 or X-201) do you think it would be better to get rid of?

Are you trying to take icore in Spring 2013?

Also, are you in Hutton now? You should apply now, if you are not already in. Hutton will look good on your business honors application.

Well I am trying to do both finance and economic consulting, so I want to try to be efficient. I wasn’t planning on taking I-core early until I sat down with my adviser this Fall and realized I am going to run out of geneds and I-core pre-reqs. If I get into honors and am not able to take Spring I-Core, my plan is to work on the Econ Consulting degree in Spring of 2013 since only one of the classes for that major requires I-core.

No I am not in Hutton and I cannot find info on how I request to be reviewed. I sent an email to Jill Baker (Hutton admissions person) so hopefully that leads to an answer.

The Bepp economic consulting requires I think eight 300+ level classes and, of course, you need a bunch of upper level finance classes as well as some upper level accounting classes to get the Bepp/Finance double major. And there is almost no overlap in courses, with just G345 counting for both bepp and finance major requirements. So, that double-major requires a ton of hours. You haven’t in the past seen that combination of majors a lot unless the student comes in with a lot of AP credit.

Starting this year, however, with the watering down of gen ed requirements, that is a very doable double major, as you can just load up on a bunch of easy gen eds or take a bunch of them in summers online or in person and transfer them to Kelley. Looks like you will already have 18 COAS gen eds done first three big semesters. Add that to the 31 Kelley required courses listed below, and you will have 49 credits of gen ed after three big semester, and only need 13 more credits. So your plan looks great.

31 credits of Kelley requirements that also count toward 62 gen ed hours
ENG-W 131 3
ECON-E 201 3
BUS-G 202 2
BUS-X 104 3
BUS-X 220 2
MATH-M 118 3
BUS-X 202 3
MATH-M 119 3
BUS-X 204 3
ECON-E 202 3
ECON-E 370 3

The new gen ed requirements enable completing double majors much, much easier than in the past, and you are taking advantage of that.

If you apply to Hutton you can definitely get into X205 next fall, which sounds great if you want exposure to a much more rigourous Target case competition.

A201 sounds a little risky gpa-wise for a freshman. Kelley honors certainly won’t expect you to have taken it freshman year. A lot of really smart kids get into business honors and avoid A201 altogether, especially freshman year, by taking A205 with Hewit, even though it only meets in Spring semesters. And a lot of these business honors students wait until after they get into business honors to take A205, even though most are in Hutton as freshmen and could take it as freshmen. My son took A205 freshman year, and it was full of business honors sophomores who did not want to risk a bad A201 grade before applying to business honors. They avoided A201/A205 to the degree that they actually took A202/A207 (usually A207 with Sprinkle in Fall after getting accepted to business honors) before A201/A205, which is a little backwards, but worth it to them not to jeopardize not getting into business honors.

Be sure to keep tying with Hutton, as you can get into all the business honors classes you still need after freshman year (except icore) if you don’t make it into business honors.

I could also take A201 this summer at UT-Austin instead of E-202. I know Vivian Winston does not recommend Finance or Accounting majors take A201/202 away from IU, but since I said I could take it at UT-Austin, she thought that would be OK.

The downside to that is I would be putting off E-202. Do you have an opinion on whether putting off E-202 is a bad idea?

I don’t think taking A201 at a cc would effect you getting into business honors, as you would be taking it while you are being evaluated for business honors and they wouldn’t know about you taking it. I know a frequent poster here who got into IBW workshop took A201 and A202 both at a cc in summer after freshman year while getting accepted to business honors. Taking it at UT Austin would look good, if anybody noticed it, and should definitely challenge you academically, but no one would probably know you ever took it there unless you told them. Austin Community College would probably be one of the better cc’s to take it at, as it gets mentioned a lot on the business major forum as a good accounting program. People can actually get all their accounting credits, including upper-level classes, at Austin CC to qualify to sit for the CPA, and you can’t say that about most community colleges. It wouldn’t be like taking it at Ivy Tech, which Kelley won’t accept A201 credit for. Here is one mention of Austin cc.

I don’t think not taking E202 until after icore would hurt you unless you were planning to do an overseas internship or overseas study, because E202 is required if you do any of those things through a Kelley program. It’s not a prerequiste for a lot of the Bepp classes, so maybe you could take E202 the same semester you start taking Bepp classes.

In case anyone was wondering, I wanted to share the response I got back from Hutton, because they really don’t mention it on the website. If you meet the standards, (14 credits, 3.7) you will automatically get an invitation to join in the middle of January.
