I need to take an AP English class as early as possible, so I decided on taking AP Lang sophomore year. A 3 on either AP exam is required in order to take history and communications classes through dual enrollment. But what am I supposed to do about senior year? Would it look bad if I took something like dual enrollment public speaking instead that year? I’ll consider switching things around if not having an AP English class for senior year would really look that bad.
You could take both of those courses in junior and senior years. Why pushing to take as a soph? Does your school offer higher level writing or lit courses beyond the AP roster?
I’m not familiar with dual enrollement public speaking as an English course, so I won’t weigh in on that.
Not having an AP English class for senior year is perfectly fine. However, I would recommend a more academic English elective; public speaking may not “count” for your potential colleges’ suggested HS English preparation. For UC’s it certainly will not count as an English course.
I’m aiming for Ivies, so I agree that if I’m not going to take an AP English class senior year, I should choose something other than public speaking. Do you think taking English 101 senior year would be repetitive since that’s what AP English classes are based off of?
I’d recommend something either theme-based or author-based. Shakespeare’s Tragedies, Detectives in Modern Fiction, etc., or an advanced writing class.
English 101 is not the course to take after taking AP lit and lang. An advanced course is what you are looking for.
If there aren’t any advanced courses offered in your high school, perhaps look into what your cc offers. Some kids do this for math who are accelerated, why not for the humanities?
I think this is a bad idea. Do AP Lang in Junior and AP Lit in Senior.
In some schools you can only take AP Lit and/or Lang junior and/or senior year. The order can be switched.
Even after Honors English 1 most people don’t have the writing skill to succeed in AP English. I would wait till junior/senior year.
