Next year, I have the choice of taking Pre-Calc or AP Stats as a sophomore. My dad is extremely against the idea of me taking Pre-Calc as the book used is a state issued Pathways book that doesn't teach anything and relies on writing a paragraph explaining your thinking for each problem you solve. In junior year, I'll be taking IB Math HL 1 either way, but if I take Pre-Calc next year, I'll take HL 2 junior year and MVC in senior year. Of course, I know I can self-study AP Stats during any year, and I want to be able to take advantage of MVC at my school, but my dad simply won't let me. He wants me to self-study it during sophomore year or the summer, but my math head won't let me test out of anything for some reason. Also, I cannot take a summer course as there aren't any which are Honors. I just want to know if AP Stats will be seen as a bad choice compared to the rigor of Pre-Calc upon come college admissions time.

bump, help please

People should say hump instead of bump, to signal a huge bump.

Precalc is better, but you’re already a year ahead so it’s ok

Challenge is relative, for example a pre-calc book from AOPS is far more challenging than most books put together in Education.

@jmoran - I was doing HW one day from the same type of book, the only difference being it was Alg 2 H. I asked for a little assurance for my answer, as he is a mathematics major. He was angry that I had to write 5 pages of work for 8 problems, when the answer could be found in 3 minutes or less and thought all the work unnecessary though the book required it. Before I knew it, I was enrolled in Alg 2 H online lol. On the assessments which I did take in the class, I got a 85% on the first quiz (a little rusty), and a 96% on the first test. However, HW took me about 1.5 hours a day. I want to take Pre-Calc, but with my schedule being rough (5 AP’s with Stats, 4 without) next year as a Sophomore, I can’t take 1.5 hours to do math each day.

@wcao9311 - Reasonable argument, but we all aren’t taking AP Calc BC freshman year. Thank god you’re not in the Class of 2017. :p

You should probably try to take pre-calc. Have you already turned in your schedule? AP Stats is an easy class to most people, and you will want Calc and Physics at the same time.

@observeraffect Yeah, I have, though changes are always welcome
.

It’d make more sense to take Pre-Calc.
