Taking Chem 6B summer session II, too accelerated??

Hey guys, so I am considering taking chem 6B with Christina Johnson. However, I am scared that the course will move too fast, and be too hard. I had trouble with 6A, but I did allright (got a B-). I am a hard worker, and willing to be dedicated. But what is your opinion? Should I wait to take chem 6b in the fall with some unknown professor (they dont have a specific name listed yet), or take chem 6b summer session II with johnson, and then 6c with her again in fall? Thanks!

My advice is don’t rush. Take it in the fall. You will do better. The Chem series is not difficult, you just have to spend time with it.

i have never had Johnson for Chem, so I can’t speak to the quality of her teaching but I am finishing up Chem 6b with Pomeroy in Summer Session I right now. Here are my impressions; although 6b is generally regarded “the hardest” out of the gen chem series, the material has a lot of continuity (topics build on each other) unlike 6a where you jumped around from Quantum Theory to Thermodynamics, so in that regard I think it is easier to follow. There are 9 chapters that need to be covered so you are essentially going over two chapters a week and most likely taking a test every week. The workload is somewhat intense but I have managed to do well so if you work hard, I definitely think you can do it.

Johnson’s a terrific teacher; she and Hoeger are reliably the two best there are. Whether SS2 chem 6B will be too fast for you is hard to predict – depends on how motivated you are and what kind of a self-taught learner you are. Everything’s in the book and the concepts aren’t impossible to understand, but if you slack off then not even the best teacher can help you.

fwiw, I thought the concepts in 6B were the easiest to teach and learn, primarily for the reasons operaticmimosa mentioned.

johnson is a good lecturer but she has DIFFICULT exams.

I did the same exact thing as you last year! Took Johnson for 6B over Summer Session II and (surprisingly) got an A in her class!

Chemistry, by far, is my weakest subject but I felt that she really paced her class well over summer. You’ve got a “quiz” every single week, which accounts for half of your overall grade, and the final exam contributes to the other half. Because you’re forced to study every week, the material is always fresh and limited to one/two chapters at a time, so it’s never overwhelming - plus the quizzes make a great study guide for her final exam.

Good luck! :D

I say take it, it’s accelerated but you only have 1 or 2 classes so it’s not that big of a deal. Chem 6B isn’t THAT hard of a class so you’ll be okay.

What UCSD2013 said about getting a better grade in the fall is not necessarily true. I actually like summer classes better than fall/winter/spring classes because the fast pace helps me not slack off and stay focused and so I did better over the summer.

Thank you all for your replies so far, they are really helping! Narathip, I am glad you replied, your first hand account of being in this exact situation is very encouraging. I think I will take her class after all. If anybody else has any good advice, keep it coming! I still have a week before I finally have to decide.
