Taking Chemistry over the summer at UCSD. Too accelerated?

I am a UCSD student, and I am thinking about taking Chem 6B with Christina Johnson during summer session 2. However, I am a bit nervous that I won't be able to get a good grade (A or B) since I will be covering three months worth of info, in one month. I have also heard she is very challenging. I took 6A last spring and found it challenging, but I did okay (I got a B). At the same time, I am a very dedicated student and am willing to work my butt off. This will be the only class I take. Those who have taken science classes over summer, do you think this is a smart move? Or should I wait? It would be MUCH MORE preferable to take the class this summer, but if it is not a good idea I will wait until fall quarter.

Thanks so much for any help!!!

Also, another reason I want to take it this summer is because I have heard very good things about Professor Johnson, and if I take chem 6B with her this summer, I can take 6C with her again in the fall. Whereas if I wait to take chem 6b in the fall, I will be taking it with some random professor (who could be terrible).

Thats how summer classes are at all schools. Its not that big of a deal if you are only taking 1-2 classes in the summer in one session. Just work hard and you will be fine.

In general, you should not take your premed prereqs over the summer – at least that is the common wisdom. Much better to spend the summer working on ECs, or just get a job making a few bucks. Even retail will teach you something about life.

So what are you worried about? Take the class, do the best you can, and move on. Yeah it’ll be accelerated, but thats why you limit yourself to 1-2 classes at a time during the summer.

I am just nervous because, I am taking calculus and behavioral statistics right now (for summer session 1), and I am barely able to handle it. And Chem 6B is supposed to be the hardest of the lower 6 series. Also, the reviews of professor johnson are very mixed at times. I’d say 70 percent say shes the best, but very difficult. And the other 30 percent say shes terrible and impossible. So, that makes me scared to take her class during a month long session (especially since I also had a hard time with chem 6A). I am so torn. Anybody on here, have first hand experience with this professor? Or with taking chemistry during summer in general??

^ Don’t put too much stock in those professor review sites - like everything else, they are a very self-selected group. People tend to only review professors if they feel strongly one way or the other. You rarely get the moderate view.

Very true Icarus. I keep forgetting that, and it ends up confusing me haha
