for fall quarter 2011, i'm planning to take chem 6c with johnson. What is the usual science course to take with chem 6c? The lab (chem 7L) or BILD? physics?

Thank you.

There is no “usual” class to take, if by “usual” you mean having a class that reinforces/helps with 6C concepts. Just continue in whatever series you have left over from the previous quarter. You can technically take 7L once you’ve completed 6B (and a lot of people do), but I’d recommend finishing the entire series first.

I’m a freshman taking chem 6C and I can say that there probably isn’t a class that is actually good to take with it. Although, I am taking BILD 1 right now, and concepts match, like the study of kinetics (free energy, spontaneity, catalysts) and metabolism. But, an understanding of kinetics from a chemical (6C) standpoint is really unnecessary for BILD 1.

Some of the stuff in 6C just looks like it would not be applicable to labs, like nuclear chem. But I wouldn’t know much about 7L. I have heard that it is really inconvenient to have to take it apart from the chem series. But also that actual understanding in lab shouldn’t be that hard to grasp again.

@astrina
is there a reason why you’d recommend taking chem 7l after finishing the chem6 series?

i was planning on taking chem 6c and chem 7l fall too…

it’s not mandatory, but having that extra quarter under your belt can only help you with your grasp of basic principles, stoichiometry, plus you’ll have a slew of old labs from your friends who have taken it already. one of the experiments (in 6bl, not sure if it transferred to 7l) involved coordination chemistry, which isn’t addressed until 6C.

about half the girls in my suite took 7L with 6C, I was in the half that waited until we were finished with the 6 series. we definitely had an easier time.

^ ahh. that sounds smart.
thanks for the reply.

not sure ill get in anyways…waitlists /:

^Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah, I’m waitlisted too. I essentially planned out my entire last 3 years of school here as I was adding my third minor so I could figure out when I could possibly take certain classes at certain quarters to try to take as many of the classes as I wanted as possible, but then something always seems to change. So this quarter I spent long amounts of time scrutinizing my schedule to take the four classes that will best maximize my ability to get the classes I want in future quarter. I signed up yesterday at noon, and by the end of the night, I had changed my mind on two of the classes. At the beginning of the day, CHEM 7L had a bunch of open spaces, by the time I signed up, I got waitlisted.

Normally when I have any sort of discrepancy on which class I want to take, I usually sign up for the class that looks like it’s going to have a waitlist if the other one isn’t, just to be safe. I didn’t do it in this case, but I really just thought I had my schedule figured out. I’m really indecisive, but there are specific classes that I want to take. Even if for some reason I don’t get into CHEM 7L, there are definitely plenty of other classes I can take instead, so no worries either way.

third minor?
daang. how would you do that?
i feel i can fit in one at the most if i were to go 4 years.
but if 5 then i could fit in more obviously…

i had the impression that youre graduating this year too or something ha ha ha

Does anyone know how bad is the workload for CHEM 7L? I heard it’s pretty intense, ha.

Im taking Chem 7L right now.

The bad: Yeah, it is very intense, like everyone says. First of all, Chem 7L is loooong, due to the 3 hour labs. Since you have 2 labs and 1 lecture a week, you will spend 7 hours a week just being “in class.” Furthermore, those lab periods are just downright stressful (at least for me) Since I’m a slow worker, I have to rush to complete experiments on time. This depends on the person, though. Lab reports are long, and require time and effort. The TA’s are especially harsh on accuracy and specificity, so BSing the lab reports is not an option.

The good: If you manage your time wisely, this class can actually be a lot of fun. Don’t wait until the night before to start lab reports. Turn in those reports early and you get 3 extra points!
MOST IMPORTANTLY, No more weak sauce high school lab crap, and you can play with very dangerous chemicals now!

^ actually, AP chem labs can play with all the same things you guys do.

@ucsdlee

I’m not graduating this year. I’m a 2nd year. Ha ha. And I actually dropped one of my minors so I only have two now. It only saves me one class though because it was in the place of some GEs. I could have graduated in 4 years with it though.

@ astrina
I didn’t take AP chem, so i guess i missed out…
