Taking Courses over the Summer (do they count?)

I plan to take Calc AB over the summer, so I can take BC senior year (i’m behind from others)

Will colleges see that I took AB and will I have to take an AP exam for it (online course)

thanks

Colleges should see it. You do not need to take the AB exam- in fact you cant. Because AP exams are only offered in May, you will be taking the BC exam (which covers calc 1 and 2), which has an AB subscore (calc 1). Since some parts of the two tests share questions, you are not allowed to take both BC and AB exams in the same year.

@guineagirl96‌ Thanks, so I can just proceed with my plan and take the BC test ONLY next year? thanks

You should worry about if your high school recognizes that you took the class. They’re the ones giving you credit for it.
And the year you take the course is the year you take the ap exam.

Yes. As mentioned above, you are not even allowed to take both the AB and BC exams in the same year.

Thanks for the responses everybody ^-^ I’m going to be speaking with my counselor tomorrow regarding this (our ap night is tomorrow, too)

@skieurope‌ Personally, do you think it’s a good idea to take AP Calc AB during the summer? Is it alot of work, and is AB really crucial to BC, because some of my friends went straight to BC but still said BC covers alot of AB

I can’t speak for taking AP Calc AB over the summer, as I have never done it. My gut tells me that it is possible, but that is really the only thing you will be able to do during those 6/8 weeks. If you have commitments outside of summer coursework, it will be hard to manage.

This really depends upon how your school structures the course. There are many many different permutations for this. Some schools off Calc BC as a year-long course that covers all the topics of AB and BC. Other schools offer a year-long course on the AB topics, followed by a semester-or year-long course that does a quick review of AB and then spends the balance of the time on the BC topics. If your school follows the latter model, you’d have a hard time keeping up; if it’s the former, it’s a race through the topics, but if you can keep up, it’s doable.
