I’ve noticed that some people take notes with pen. And most people who I’ve seen use pen for note taking also happen to be male. Actually, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a female use a pen to take notes. I’m curious to see if there’s a correlation between gender and writing options. As a pencil user, I have no idea why people choose to write in pen, so I’m also curious about that.
Do you use pen or pencil?
Why?
What is your gender?
I’m female and I use pen exclusively. I find that black and blue ink is easier on my eyes than lead from pencils. I also think that I happen to write more legibly/neatly with pen.
In high school and in my humanities types class in college, I religiously wrote with pens. However, now that I am in my technical classes I write strictly with pencil. It’s much easier drawing diagrams, solving problems, and writing notes with pencils because you’re able to make corrections without striking things out like you would have to do with a pen. I still use pens when I’m not in my major classes.
Female, It all depends for math, physics, and chemistry I’ll use a pencil so if you make a mistake(which is common/) you can erase it. I use a pen when taking English, biology, and any other subject don’t involve equations.
Gender and writing implement usage… Such a random observation, lol.
I’m a female, and I take notes in pen because the notes are easier to read. The notes that I first take in class generally aren’t the final copy of notes I’ll use; I’ll either type them up or recopy them in a way that makes more sense to me / in my own words. However, I do only use pencils for problem sets, and I prefer them for exams so that I can submit clean and error-free work.
It depends on the class. For my science and math classes it’s always pencil because I’m drawing lots of formulas and diagrams and potentially erasing and rewriting things. In my social science/humanities classes I tend to use pen more because I’m just writing words, rather than diagrams.
I’ve always used pencil because they are erasable. Crossed out words look annoying, and in science/engineering classes pens are rather impractical because of all the diagrams I have to draw.
However, I got an internship this summer and they have the BEST erasable pens in the office. They seriously erase better than pencils. So I’m going to buy those and switch to pens next year, lol. I love these pens an unreasonable amount to be completely honest.
I always pens, like - religiously. I can’t remember the last time I used a pencil, just because I hate using them so much. I find them to be clunky and smudgy and messy and imprecise, where pens I find to be smooth, ergonomic, precise, and with my cursive, aesthetically pleasing.
Female. Pens because I learned the hard way that it is no fun to go to study for a final and find your old pencil-written notes smudged all over each other and totally illegible.
Female. Always write notes in thin, inky pen. Except for math, then I use thin pencil. Pen is easier for me to see, and I write much neater with a thin ink pen than a smudgy pencil.
It depends on the class for me. In my Medical Terminology class I used a pencil. My teacher talked fast and I had to write fast. In others I used a pen. I am female.
I’m a girl and it depends on the subject. For math, I use a pencil because I almost always end up needing to erase things, and I hate how messy it looks when you have to scratch things out with pen. For other subjects, though, especially easy ones, I use pen because the dark lines look cleaner. I also prefer using pens on essay exams because no one can erase my name or essays, and it is easier for the grader to read.
