Hi,
So I currently have 53 units at my cc...I will have 65 at the end of this semester, and I have also taken my stats at ucla extension (listed there as 5 units though not sure what the translates to as they are quarter units). I know that I can transfer up to 70 units, so I am considering taking a "easy" online class of summer. My question is, aside from raising my gpa a bit, will it make any real difference to have those extra units? Practically speaking will I have to take any fewer units at uc if I transfer with 70 vs. 65 or 68??
Thanks for any clarity/input!!

If you are already done with IGETC and your pre-major courses it will not make a significant difference because you are going to take upper division courses at UC, which are not available at cc. Unless there is a particular cc course you’d still like to take and learn… What is a more practical choice is to take a course at a UC during the summer, if you can do that.

I am just confused…why then can you transfer 60-70 units? If there was no difference why not just cap it at 60?

I have a similar question. I completed 60 units, been acceped, but am missing one prereq. Would it be okay for me to take it over the summer? Would I have any other option?

Actually, yes. The extra 10 semester units count towards graduation. 10 semester units or 15 quarter units, which evaluates to probably 3 courses, means you have to take three less classes inorder to graduate with your degree. They require 60 but cap it at 70, so students don’t graduate too early by taking loads of courses at cc. I think they also want you taking classes there, so they can make more money.

smileycanee: I would definitely do that. More than likely you’ll have to take it wherever you transfer, so why not? Even if you had 100 units, you would end up having the prereq fulfilled and not have to eventually take it at a UC.

u could find someone in your class to give you friendship with benefits…

pfffft

seriously tho u shud take summer class. real talk

If you think you can get an A (which will boost your GPA) in the class you plan on taking, go for it! I took a summer class last year and I had lots of fun taking it. 1 class over a 6 week period was really not that much. If you don’t plan on traveling or working, it’s a great time-filler.

@IndieRockNRoll: Thanks!

good luck hunting for summer classes…
my community college district canceled the entire summer session :(

Luckily for me I am in the TAP (scholars) program and have a pretty good priority enrollment date…I think I will be fine! Now to pick the class…

If you’re just taking a random class to boost your gpa at a comm. college, don’t do it. When you transfer, you accumulate a new gpa at the university which is separate from your gpa at the comm. college.

If you want to take the class because it will count towards your degree plan at the university, you should take it.
