I'm a rising junior planning to take the SAT II Chemistry test. I had a chance to take AP Chem junior year but I decided to take it senior year instead since I haven't taken physics yet and I don't want to take that senior year. I also heard that it looks bad when you're applying to colleges and they see that you still haven't even finished your physics course yet. Is this true? I know AP Chem isn't a must when it comes to the SAT II Chemistry but my question is is it ideal to do this? Since I plan on taking AP Chem eventually anyways, should I just take it this year, physics senior year and then the SAT II Chem the June of next year?

I don’t think it is so critical to take AP Physics before senior year. For many students, it may not even be feasible. However, you may want to schedule your junior class towards your intended major. If it is related to certain subject, then taking the AP and subject test in junior may help your chance. My D wants to major in ChemE, so she has AP Chem and subject test in junior. After all, it does not even matter for her as the school she is most likely going to does not admit into ChemE directly but just college of engineering.

^ No, I’m not talking about AP Physics. I’m talking about regular physics. I’m not sure what I want to major in… I did well in the regular chemistry course that I had last year so I just want to get a SAT II in. Just not sure if I should take AP Chem first or not.

Then, it does not even matter. Why would one care if you take regular physics in senior or earlier? If you take AP Chem, it would be a lot easier to prepare (if you need any preparation) for Chem subject test taking the month after.

You can do it either way. It matters more to the people on cc than to the admission folks.
