Taking the train into campus

I was thinking during the 1st summer orientation (7/7) we may take the train from Buffalo to Penn station and then LIRR into Stony Brook. Now, there IS a SB bus that will take us from the LIRR station on campus to where we need to be, correct? And, if so, will we be able to use it though my daughter won't have her student ID yet?

Yes, the University transit system meets every in-coming train at the station. You do not need an ID card to board the bus.

Honestly, the station is on-campus and it may even be beneficial to walk through the recreation/athletic area to the SAC (or wherever you are to meet for orientation) just to get a look at that side of the campus.

The LIRR Stony Brook train station leaves you a 10-min walk away from the academic mall (the center of campus). You also have the option to use the SBU transit buses that are free for everyone, including non-students.

The Bus Routes ‘Outer Loop’, or ‘Railroad’ leave you in the SAC Loop.

I’d avoid taking the Outer Loop from the train station if you want to go to the SAC/Academic Mall. The outer loop comes from the SAC and goes around the rest of the campus until it goes back there, which can take about half an hour.
