TAP courseload for UCLA transfer

I'm new to this website, but I'm finding it to be quite helpful so far :)

This is my situation-

I'm currently a student at a CCC.

I'm an English major hoping to transfer to UCLA next fall (2009)

I recently decided to start the TAP program this fall before I transfer to UCLA (if I'm accepted). I'll have a year at CC to complete the program.

At my CC they require us to take five honors classes, so I've been trying to organize them into my schedule along with my major prep.

So far it looks like I'll be taking two honors classes in the fall semester and three during the spring semester.

My only problem is during the fall semester I'll be taking a total of 17.25 units (with two honors classes) and in the spring I'll have 12 units (with three honors classes).

I wanted to finish my major prep asap, which is why I crammed 17 units into one semester (I know UCLA is particular about finishing major prep).

Here is what my CC schedule looks like:
Fall 2008-
Span 2
Eng 17a
Hum 10a (honors)
Eng 4 (honors)
Eng 44

Spring 2009-
Anth 2 (honors)
Poli Sci 12 (honors)
Hum 10b (honors)
Eng 21a or 21 b (haven't decided which one yet)

I'm afraid I won't be able to handle 17 units in the fall, and I'm not sure how difficult the honors classes are. I'm worried, to say the least.

Should I split my courseload evenly between the two semesters? Or should I tough it out and see if I can handle 17 units?

Would UCLA mind if I complete my last two major prep classes in the spring semester before i transfer? Will that hurt my chances?

Also, when will I be considered as "TAP certified" since I only have a year to complete the program?

Sorry this post was ridiculously long..
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks!

It seems like you have a really heavy course load. English classes take a long time because of the readings you have to do. I remember taking 2 in one semester and was annoyed with the sheer amount of reading. Usually it is not wise doing 3 honors classes. I’ve done two in one semester and it wasn’t that bad. Good luck.

I think it depends on what your strengths are – I personally find that loading up on a lot of units when I’m taking a foreign language course means that I am really hating life, spending a lot of time cramming text into my eyeballs and not really getting to enjoy the material or acquire it deeply. I wouldn’t want to crowd three courses in my preferred field of study together with a time-vacuum like a language class.

It can be done, but as mobilemayhem notes, it means a lot of reading, and that translates into time. If you’re a native speaker of Spanish or are just one of those enviable people who doesn’t need to put in many hours to get the grades (don’t forget about language lab time, which was required at my school), then that schedule might work for you.

Could you shift one or two classes into Winter session?

I’m not sure on this but you should check to see if you need to have the honors classes finished before the spring semester. At my CC you need to finish them the fall before you transfer.
