I'm applying to UCLA for Fall '13 as an Economics major. I have a 3.88 GPA and I don't feel like I have the best of chances, and I dropped out of SJSU last year and enrolled in my community college to go for that dream. I messed up in my Accounting course in the summer and got a B+ which killed my GPA. If I take all 6 of my honors classes next semester and get TAP certified, will it help me? Or is it too late to do TAP now? I seriously can't afford to be rejected with all the risk I put into this.

I wouldn’t worry about your GPA, it’s pretty solid, even for Econ at UCLA. You have until the end of Spring to finish TAP. However, you will be certified sometime after Fall by your CCC. You have to make sure that your CCC and honors counselor knows that you want to be TAP certified and that you will meet all of the requirements. You will have to list what honors classes you plan to take if you have any left after Fall (it’s completely fine if you do).

With that said, how many of your units will be from your CCC, and how many will be from SJSU? Will you be considered a CCC applicant by the UCs?

At least 35 will be from my CCC and I have 6 units from my summer courses at a different CCC, and I only have 25 from SJSU. I’m hoping they consider me a CCC applicant because I’m a full time student at my CCC and the majority of my overall units are CCC units.

Well, I believe they will if a majority of your units are from CCCs.

So, you can take those honors classes in Spring if you need. I would focus on completing all pre-reqs by Fall if possible, worry about the other classes later.

If you do all of that (and complete IGETC), I’d say you will be accepted assuming you write a good essay and maintain your GPA.

Do the UC’s look at my current semester grades during the application process? Or do they just look at my grades from last year. I know eventually I will have to send in my final transcript in the Spring, but I hope that the grades from this Fall semester will weigh in the admission process.

The grades from Fall will be included. You will have to update your application sometime in January with the new grades.

Awesome, thanks for the help! I’m assuming that you go/went to UCLA?

I will be attending UCLA this Fall. :)

I’m envious! UCLA is the school I definitely want to go to next year. Is it worth it for me to go through hell next semester by taking 6 honors classes at a time and getting my TAP certification? Or should I just take a risk with what I have right now? I have some pretty solid EC’s and I’m working hard on my essay, but I heard UCLA is more about prerequisites and GPA.

Can you take any of those classes in Winter? Also, are you sure you have to take at least 6? 4 or 5 won’t do?

I’m not exactly sure if I can take any of those during the Winter, because I don’t know if they’re even offered. If they are, I’m definitely going to take them. But for my school (West Valley College), it says on the Honors Program brochure that I need to complete 6 courses, or 18 units with a GPA of 3.3 or higher to earn TAP certification. However, it didn’t say that was only for UCLA. They said it was for UCLA, USC, UCSC, UCI, UCR, and other universities as well. Is there one specific rule in regarding to TAP for UCLA, or does it vary from each CCC?

It varies for each CCC, so if those are the requirements, then you will have to meet them.

It’s honestly up to you. TAP’s biggest advantage is being able to list a non-impacted alternate major for (UCLA will not consider it unless you have TAP–and only if it non-impacted). They also say that it gives you “priority”, but they never really specify what that means. That doesn’t mean it won’t help, it’s just hard to know how much it will. 6 classes is also a lot to take in 1 semester. If you can really handle it and feel that it’s worth it, you might want to. But if not, you still have a 3.9ish GPA.

I still have to take Calculus II next semester, and they don’t offer it in the Winter, so I doubt I can take 7 classes without having my GPA suffer. I’ll just have to keep my grades up and pray until the Spring. Do you personally know anyone that got into UCLA’s Econ major with less than a 3.9?

Ya, if I were you, I would just focus on Calc II and forget about the other TAP classes.

Your GPA is more than good enough. Most people with 3.8s get in for Econ. Some with 3.7s do as well. Just focus on making sure it doesn’t drop this Fall.

Thanks a ton! You’ve been the most helpful person on CollegeConfidential so far. Have a blast this year at UCLA! :D

No problem. Good luck! I hope to see you at UCLA next year. :)
