I am planning to apply as a Computer Science major, but if I also do TAP, what major should I choose as an alternative to Computer Science major? I want a major that has the most relevance and similarities to the Computer Science major, because I am going to apply into Computer Science when I enter UCLA if I don't get in the first time.

TAP is only for Letters and Sciences majors. I didn’t think you could TAP into an HSSEAS major. For an alt major to CS, you could do Applied Math, or Math/CS or something along that line. Similar pre-reqs, and you get to take CS electives.

Oh so you are not allowed to TAP HSSEAS major? Meaning, UCLA won’t allow you to choose a back-up major for TAP? I just thought that if you apply to HSSEAS you just don’t get the benefit of that slight TAP GPA bump.

I think you can do this. They’ll ignore TAP when evaluating your application for CS, but if CS rejects you, TAP will kick in and you’ll get a second chance with your non-impacted alternate major.

I say choose any non-impacted major in which you have complete the pre-reqs. If admitted to a non-impacted major you chould always change majors to another non-impacted major. You could also take a few CS courses on the side

“Note: The TAP policy on review of alternate majors is still restricted to those in the UCLA College (Letters and Science). Majors in the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science (HSSEAS), the School of Arts and Architecture (SOAA), the School of Nursing, and the School of Theater, Film and Television (TFT) are not acceptable for alternate major review.” UCLA TAP Website

@SMCguy so… does this make ur assumption false?

Umm I don’t think it does. It just means you can’t list Computer Science as an alternate major. It says nothing about listing a non-impacted major from L&S as an alternate major.

who can I seek to see if that is true? the applied math major, which has the closest relevance to computer science according to asphyxiac, requires me to complete almost the whole series of biology, and i simply cannot squeeze that into my already busy workload of computer science pre-reqs.

Talk with your TAP (honors) counselor and also contact someone at UCLA to be sure. [UCLA - Transfer Alliance Program](http://www.ugeducation.ucla.edu/tap/contact.htm)

wait, then again, it just mentions how HSSEAS cannot be considered as an alternative major, so do u think the TAP extra GPA bump still applies? Or does HSSEAS just ignore TAP as a whole and does not even take the fact that I took TAP into account during the admission process?

I can’t say for sure, but TAP isn’t supposed to benefit you for HSSEAS…so yes, they should ignore anything related to TAP.

If HSSEAS rejected you, then TAP would kick in and your application would be forwarded to L&S for consideration of your alt major.

other the fact that HSSEAS cannot be chosen to be the alternative, i have yet to see a proof that TAP cannot give you that small GPA boost. Can anyone confirm/disprove the TAP GPA boost for HSSEAS majors? Come to think of it, the TAP GPA boost hasn’t even been proven to be true for L&S majors, or has it?

vbump…

no one can confirm it, seriously?

Come on…

Asd- What is it with the TAP GPA boost you are talking about? I’ve never heard of this. Do you have any links on this?

I think he means that if both people have the same GPA, the person with TAP is more likely to get in.

The TAP site just show stats comparing kids with TAP that got in vs people without TAP. TAP on avg did have much more people admitted than others, but then again people with TAP usually had a 3.5+ gpa. The person who manages the TAP program did confirm it gives a “GPA boost” but by GPA boost I mean what I said above.

@xViral
Now my question is did that apply to Computer Science major??

^^^^^^^^^^^^

bumpppppppppp

Bumppppppppp
