Teach for America: 2011-2012

Congrats to all accepted.
What’s the acceptance rate for TFA? Are there any special hooks (like they say in college admissions)? Curious. Thanks

Last year, the acceptance rate was somewhere around 10% (46,000 applicants for a corps of 4,500; but I don’t know how many people were accepted and declined the offer). I don’t know what the acceptance rate is this year.

I don’t think there are any special hooks, but they are fairly transparent about what they are looking for ([Who We’re Looking For - Teach For America](http://www.teachforamerica.org/admissions/who-were-looking-for/)). Being from a low socioeconomic or minority background might get you more heavily recruited, but it supposedly doesn’t make you more likely to get accepted.

I cannot wait for May 2nd!

I have been searching, but still have no better information on why some were waitlisted. Theories include not enough spots based on cut budgets, TFA losing federal funding and no longer being able to support enough areas, more qualified applicants already placed there etc etc etc.

I am going ahead with plans to move out of my current place on the 1st of June and stay with family and friends until I leave for institute and if not, then I make alternative plans.

Waitlist…bah! :(

Kelly

I just noticed on the TFA website that Appalachia is a new region. Does anyone know if this was a choice on the survey we filled out after getting waitlisted? I don’t remember and I can’t access the survey anymore.

I am pretty sure they already filled that region. :(

Turtle

Hi guys, I too am on the waitlist (last deadline), and I noticed today that my transitional funding status has changed from “under review” to “complete.” Part of me wants to take that as a good sign - has anyone else’s status changed (or remained the same)???

Thanks and good luck!

I think so! Good luck and let us know! :)

waitlisted till the 20th. Probably would prefer them to just bring the guillotine down at this point.

Bummer - waitlisted til the 20th too. Guess that transitional funding status change meant nothing after all. Congrats to those that made it in today, to the remaining waitlisters, I feel your pain.

Ditto Kiddos.

Anyone in today? Or have most of us been pushed on to May 20th? I’m still just as excited! Got to stay motivated, right?

Anyway, props to everyone, it’s not too much longer now.

Me too–waitlisted till May 20.

Same story over here. Best of luck to everyone in waiting for the big May 2-0!

Asked to wait unitil the 20th as well :-/ This isn’t bad news, but isn’t great news either. I just hope all this waiting pays off!

I wonder if anyone even got in/put off the waiting list? hmm

i was actually taken off the waitlist and was offered a placement today, in chicago. stunned and i do not know how im supposed to start preparing for such a huge transition in such little time.

I also got off the waitlist and I will be teaching in Dallas. I’m with you peas715, there’s very little time for us to transition but at the same time, I am tremendously excited. I wish the best for those of you who are still on the waitlist.

You guys who got in - Congratulations!

Just a quick question - were Chicago and Dallas, respectively, places you guys had selected to teach in initially or on the waitlist survey?

Also, does anyone know the possibility of us finding out (yay or nay) prior to the 20th?

hi canesk03,

Chicago was my second choice initially and was not on the waitlist survey for me.
as to the other question about possibly finding out earlier, I have no idea.

I don’t think anyone will find out any sooner than May 20th based on posts from previous years and, more importantly, both of Teach For Ame rica’s waitlist letters (they say they’ll advise ON May 20, not “by” or “on or before”). They have only been a few hours early at most on all other deadlines - I wouldn’t expect that to change.

I do appreciate your optimism - your post got me out of my mini-pity party - but realistically, unless something changes in the next 17 days with the federal budget, I think many of us waitlisters will be involved in other pursuits next year.

I am hopeful that I’ll get in, but if you don’t have plans b c & d by now, you better get on it!

Hi! congrats squirr3180 for getting off the waitlist!
any tips for people still waiting?
did you write another letter of intent to tfa or provide them with additional material to strengthen your app?

thanks

Hey All!

I was accepted at the May 2nd deadline to teach in a new region: South Carolina!!! After I was initially waitlisted, I then filled out the form letting them know I would like to be placed where I am most needed. If you still have the opportunity to change your regional preferences, I would do that (if you can be flexible with the regional placement). South Carolina was not one of my top choices, but I am thrilled by the opportunity to teach in a new region and be part of a movement in South Carolina!

I truly wish you all the best of the luck!!!

If you end up at the Houston Institute, see you then!
