Teach For America 2014 Corps

Thanks @townie01 and @rolemodel32! @townie01, did you just write on the posters? I’m equally as nervous about being prepared and this seems to me like the method that gives me the most control for the lesson.

Ya… basically, I used different color markers that coordinated with different steps of the objective and had all the notes written out on the posters. There were a few things that I wrote in as the lesson progressed, but I also used that velcro technique to unveil components of some answers when students answered them correctly. All and all I had 4 foam boards and I used the front and back. Of course, this is a really specific technique and others in my group had no visuals at all or relied on the whiteboard that was provided. I would advise to do whatever you’re most comfortable practicing over and over. With practice, really anything can work

@iteacher I talked to some TFA people before and after my interview and they all pretty much told me the same thing. It’s not meant to test your knowledge of educational issues (although adding educational terminology like the self-fulfilling prophecy definitely helps). It’s designed to see whether or not you can work well with a group of people. You’re not supposed to speak for long. I only said two things. Just make sure that when you do say something in the conversation, make sure it’s relevant to the task/goal and acknowledge that you’re listening to what other people were saying. Showing that you can listen is very helpful. I can’t imagine it weighs heavily on their minds since every group of people can be extremely different. In my group, the conversation went extremely off topic because some of the candidates rambled and wanted to prove their knowledge of educational issues rather than the specific task we were supposed to accomplish. It also helped that my interviewer asked me how did I feel about the group activity during our personal interview and that allowed me to speak about how I approached it and how I felt about the overall conversation itself. So I wouldn’t worry too much. I remember a TFA corps member told me just “Get in and get out.” Add your piece and then let someone else share their thoughts. And if people are talking way too long and not letting anyone else join in, then I think it’s ok to jump in when there’s a small pause.

I second everything that Rolemodel32 said. There were definitely a few ppl who wanted to dominate the conversation. As a closet introvert, I offered to take notes at the beginning and kind of guided the conversation (just to make sure that we answered all of the questions). I was worried about not displaying knowledge of the article content but my interviewer later said content was not the point of the exercise - group dynamics are…

Good luck to all of you that were invited to the Final Interview this week! It’s a great experience and the TFA Interviewers will definitely give you an opportunity to showcase the best of your abilities. My best advice is to get to your interview site as early as you can. Getting to know the other candidates on a more personal level will increase your comfortability and also increase your teamwork approach! Also, don’t worry, it’s human nature to second guess every little detail immediately after the interview is over (I’m sure all of us 1DL/2DL can say the same) ;)

Hey, everyone! Hope all is well. Just wishing a bit of good luck to everyone who already interviewed, and everyone who is interviewing this week! Just let go of the nerves and bask in the awesomeness of making it this far. My interview is tomorrow, and I am beyond excited!!! I thought I would be nervous as hell, but I keep saying to myself, “You got this, girl.” Hugs to everyone :)

Thank you everyone for your input! 3DL’s WE GOT THIS

I just wanted to stop by to wish everyone luck. Thank you to everyone who shared tips, insights and words of encouragement.

Just a few more days left til my interview (Thursday!!!)

Good luck fellow 3DLs! Interview week is almost done!

Has anyone had their interview yet? How did it go!? I have mine tomorrow! Hopefully this impending snow storm won’t mess with it too much!!!

Just wanted to show some love to 3DL applicants interviewing this week! You’re going to do GREAT. Just remember to take a deep breath and look at your interviewers as actual people, not scary ones. Connect with them on a personal level, and SMILE. Practice, practice, practice your sample teach and be confident with it! My recruiter told me when I was going through the process that confidence is HUGE for TFA interviews. If you don’t appear confident, that’s a huge detriment to you. So have fun and feel free to PM me with any questions! I’ll be a 2014 corps member in greater boston. Hugs!

Hey 3DL!

I’ll be 2014 Corps Member in Alabama! Studying for the General Science Praxis right now matter of fact :confused: Good luck with interviews this week! Just go in and be confident. You’ve made it this far for a reason. Make friends too! Trust me, the interview process is so much easier when you feel comfortable with your peers.
BE CONFIDENT. BE GREAT. BE YOU

Soooooo maybe I’m just being stupid, but I’m having an issue with transitional funding that makes me think I didn’t get accepted. I had my final interview on Tuesday, but I haven’t finished the TF application yet (it’s due tomorrow). When I log in and go to that tab, the only thing under it is “status” and the info on the first page. When I click on status, it says “Your transitional funding status will not be available until you complete the online portion of your application.” There’s no other section next to the “status” tab that lets me even start the application, and there’s supposed to be, correct? I tried using a different browser, and it still did the same thing.

Soooo is it possible that it’s already in the system that I’ve been rejected and that’s why the application part got taken away or is this some common issue that I just need to email them about?

sorry if this is a stupid question but I’m nervous!

How did interviews go??? I think my interview was awesome. I made sure to go first with the 5 minute lesson just so that I could get it out of the way. Everyone’s lessons were pretty good. There was only one person whose lesson was a little weird. The interviewers didn’t try to make the sample lesson difficult by saying wrong answers or anything like that. After the 5 minute lesson, we got into groups to discuss a reading the interviewers passed out, and also discuss the readings we had to download. My group did well as nobody tried to dominate or talk over everyone. After the group work, the interviewers talked about Teach For America and then opened the room up for questions. Then, everyone signed up for their afternoon interview. I was a little worried about what the interview would entail, but it was awesome. While my interviewer asked me maybe 4 or 5 questions, we spent most of that time just having a conversation. So, don’t be nervous. The interviewers have went through the process themselves, so they’re really friendly.

Well I just went through the interview process yesterday and let me tell y’all it was exhausting because I didn’t eat breakfast. Eat breakfast y’all!
@wanderlust685 How was their lesson weird ? we might have been in the same room! hahaha

@Wanderlust685
I actually had a pretty similar experience. Everyone did a really great job during the lessons, not just teaching but with being supportive/interactive as well. There was also one girl in my group who had a weird lesson too haha.

And yeah, the group activity was similar also. No one really tried to dominate it, but there was one girl who spoke the most often and had a lot to say (not a bad thing though).

My one-on-one was okay. I feel like it probably could have been better though. :/

Thanks for wishing us luck!

I have my interview tomorrow and I’m feeling confident :D

@pitttt I’m actually having the same problem. I’m attempting to finish my application by tonight but I keep getting the same message. Have you had a chance to contact TFA and figure out the problem?

@Serene
I actually didn’t get a chance to contact TFA, but the application fixed itself! All of that worrying for nothing haha. I guess there was just a glitch, or they were having problems with it lately. I got lucky that it fixed on its own, but you may want to contact them.

So I just got an e-mail this afternoon from TFA reminding me to upload an official transcript in place of my unofficial one (my college only offers physical transcripts and takes notoriously long to process requests).

Do you think this might be an early sign that I’ve gotten in? They probably wouldn’t ask for my official transcript if I’ve been rejected, right?
