Teach For America - 2019 Corps

@HopingForTFA2019 how did you figure all that out? And how positive are you that those are accurate indicators of acceptance? Not trying to be a doubter, just want to know how emotionally invested I should be in my timeline disappearing

@WAtfa19 I read through the entire 2017 and 2018 threads. It was consistent with every single round. there were some who had timelines that were still accepted, but very very few. Everyone whose timeline disappeared always got in. Even the other applicants I spoke to outside of these forums had the same results.
It’s not a perfect science, but from looking at the past two years, it’s been a pretty accurate indicator.

@HopingForTFA2019 when do the timelines typically disappear? I had my interview on Monday and still have my timeline. My interviewer said we find out on May 21

@WAtfa19 has your timeline disappeared?

@cctfa321 It varies, they don’t just all disappear at once. My friend’s disappeared the day after her interview. I interviewed on a Thursday and my timeline disappeared Monday afternoon. I think it’s just whenever they process your application and make a decision.

I now also have an option for transitional funding that I didn’t have Monday, but I assume that’s just because I’ve already had my interview and not that having the option to apply for transitional funding is indicative of acceptance. (it actually says that I can apply starting Fall 2018)

@cctfa321 Correct. Besides, we can’t even apply for transitional funding until the Fall.

@HopingForTFA2019 thank you! I am a bit stressed now that my timeline hasn’t disappeared because I thought that my interview went really well and my recruiter was sure before my interview that I would do really well and be a good fit for tfa (I didn’t really trust that comment though because he is a bit of a hype man lol).

I’m curious how the people who weren’t accepted felt about their interview? I feel like a lot of people probably felt that their interviews went well and didn’t get in so maybe I should still worry about getting accepted.

@cctfa321 Give it time, and try not to stress about it too much. Like I said, some people were still accepted without their timeline disappearing! As long as you feel confident in your interview, then you’ve done all you can, and I’m sure you did great!

@HopingForTFA2019 You’re right I’m in the middle of exams right now so I guess focusing on this is a way for me to procrastinate haha. Have you decided on a region/do you know where you’re going to be placed?

@cctfa321 Yes, they placed me in the Southwest Ohio region. Unfortunately that is where I am from, so I am not very excited about the idea of moving home in my late 20s. But, at least I know the area very well and am comfortable there. I am worried, though, that I will not get placed in the city I need to be placed in for my husband to find adequate work, since the SW Ohio region covers three major cities. But, I’m going to play the waiting game and see where it takes us.
Do you know where you would like to go?

D.C.! I don’t know if that’s a highly preferred region or not . I want to teach in DCPS after and if I get placed in DC I will already have my certification. I’ll also have the option to do a masters with Hopkins (although I’m not sure what the acceptance rate is like for TFA affiliates).

Where do you currently live? What were your top regions?

@cctfa321 I currently live near St. Louis. I really wanted Colorado or San Antonio because those would be best for my husband’s career, but I suppose anywhere near an Air Force Base will be fine. So, hopefully I’m placed in Dayton, OH.

Just to let you know, my interviewer and I got to talking about placements and regions and she told me that the D.C. region is VERY full right now and that very very few applicants will be placed there. So, if you’re adamant on D.C., you might consider making it your only highly preferred selection, even though they try to get you to add more than 1 to your HP list.
As far as JHU, all TFA Corps Members placed in a region where JHU is an option are automatically accepted. It’s one of the biggest reasons I’m going to accept Ohio, because that’s an opportunity too good to pass up.

@HopingForTFA2019 I hope you get this city you want! Did you put anything down for your special circumstances?
Really DC is already so full for 2019? I thought there have only been two rounds of ED and then there’s still the 5 rounds for admission starting in the fall? Didn’t they say that everyone has a fair chance for regions regardless of the time you applied? Anyway, it is very helpful to know that DC is a bit of a hotspot. I will definitely put it as my only HP, thank you!

@cctfa321 I can’t put a special circumstance for a city within the region, you can make special circumstances for a region, but they can’t guarantee that a school in Dayton will want to hire me. I might only get job offers from schools in Cincinnati. It’s really out of their hands.

It’s all about what is available as far as contracts with the schools. Just because a Corps member’s two years are up does not mean they won’t sign a contract to stay on with that same school. Then, that is a slot the district does not need TFA to fill. I think what she meant was that there are way more applicants for D.C. than slots available and that most of those slots stay full. You do have a fair chance regardless of when you apply, but it’s about availability and contracts the districts make with TFA.

@HopingForTFA2019 I did put down a special circumstance for DC, do you know how likely they are to honor that?

@cctfa321 I don’t think I have heard of anyone not getting their circumstance honored unless they weren’t eligible to teach in that region. So, if your circumstance is concrete, like you have a family to support there or a mortgage, then you’ll probably be fine!

@HopingForTFA2019 the problem is that I was rushed when filling out the form and only mentioned one part of my special circumstance (the least significant part that probably wouldn’t even be considered a special circumstance) and not about how I want to stay close to home to help take care of my elderly parents (and I also don’t know how much this is a special circumstance).

@cctfa321 That’s unfortunate. If you get accepted and placed somewhere that is not D.C., you can always call and further explain your circumstance. Hopefully it works out for you!

@cctfa321 my timeline is still there, let me know if anything changes with yours
