Teach For America: Waiting List

With all the rolling invites going on, I wonder if May 21st getting here means that those still on the waitlist aren’t getting off it?

I don’t say that to be pessimistic or anything. I’m just wondering what to prepare myself for. Then again, I guess it’s hard to really know what’s going on on their end.

I was wondering the same thing… only because how else could they assure that everyone they invited actually accepted the offer if they only told us on May 21st??

I’m feeling pretty pessimistic myself; however, I keep reminding myself that because I was put on the Phoenix wait list and their vote on the sales tax/proposition 100 isn’t even until Tuesday, there’s still hope. Honestly, too, I think it’s possible that Arizona isn’t the only region where a circumstantial and pending decision is yet to be made that may delay additional invitations until May 21st… I guess we’ll just have to wait and see! Keeping my fingers crossed for everyone :)

Well, the initial results suggest proposition 100 passed in Arizona! Here’s to hoping this means more of us are admitted off the wait list!

[Early election results point to passage of Prop 100](http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2010/05/18/20100518prop-100-arizona.html)

I just got an email telling me that they wanted to place me in Houston! Good luck to everyone!

GrLittle! Me too! I am assigned to high school mathematics! Sooooo excited!

i also got an e-mail a few hours ago. elementary (4-8) in houston :)

I have elementary also. Have you guys accepted? And did you hear that we have to go to the institute in the Delta?

I just got an email tonight saying I’ll be teaching High School Science in Houston.

My training institute is in Houston, not the Delta though.

So crazy that all of us waitlisters got put in Houston! Ha! I haven’t accepted yet though. I know we have a week to decide, but something that is annoying is the fact that all the dates aren’t adjusted for the waitlisters. So it’s telling me to have stuff done by May 5th and stuff like that.

Whoops, nevermind. I am attending the Delta Institute.

p.s. of those accepted into the houston corps, did you receive an additional e-mail stating that you would attend the DELTA INSTITUTE as opposed to the HOUSTON INSTITUTE?

oops i see that now. what’s up with the Delta Institute? i already accepted! i’m so excited…just wanna hear about dates and such.

I was invited to teach special education in Phoenix!! Seems like a lot of you are in Houston… Anyone joining me in Phoenix? Congratulations to everyone!

Congats to everyone! And yes, I saw that thing about attending institute in the Delta. There is tons of stuff to read along with paperwork and deadlines–I’m just so excited to finally be in. I have no idea about Delta State University, and Cleveland, Mississippi for that matter, but since we will probably be a small group (Houston CMs @ the Delta insitute) so we will all be able to meet each other in person!

Hi, not to hijack this thread, but I have a quick question…my son is a High school sph and wants to be teacher, how should he go about it?

What has your route been? Thanks.

I just got the email last night telling me that I’ll be teaching secondary math in Phoenix. Anyone else overwhelmed by the amount of things to get done in 2 weeks?

@pixeljig We have all applied to the Teach for America (for the most part). If you go to TeachforAmerica.org they have plenty of information there. Teach for America is, at the most basic level, an alternative certification program.

Your son could also do a regular certification program through a university/college that offer certification as part of a program.

rhirhi…i’m totally on board with you. the little time that we have to figure everything out (and the fact that the deadlines are ALL wrong on our letter) is really overwhelming. especially since i am currently working full-time and organizing a big art show AND have to drive down from Newark, NJ. i got a phone call from a staff member yesterday, but was unable to talk to her for very long; i’m hoping to get lots of answers from her.

additional stress…knowing that we have to get an apartment in Houston before school starts but we’ll be in Mississippi until the end of July

STILL really excited though!!!

hey all,

just wanted to share some additional info that i’ve gotten; i was contacted by a staff member over the weekend. it seems that we have to be in Houston for induction, Mississippi for institute, and then back to Houston for round zero. apparently, they accepted 50 of us from the waitlist into Houston when some spots opened up BUT there was no more space for us at Rice.

that being said, they’re going to put us up in a hotel (paid for by TFA during induction). the rep also told me that they’re trying to set up our interviews for that weekend since we will not be in Houston again until after induction. furthermore, we have to take the TExES…TFA is going to be setting up a charter bus to pick all of us up to go to Louisiana for testing.

phew that’s a lot of info. but it was definitely settling for me. we’re supposed to be getting a follow up e-mail with all the relevant deadlines, etc. has anyone received anything yet?

congrats again to all!!

Congrats to everyone!

I’ll be doing Teach for America in Tulsa (FAR from my first choice, but hey, it’s an acceptance!), which means I’ll be joining the Phoenix folks for Institute! It’s coming up soon!
