Temp Housing, Roommates, etc.

Do the people allocating temporary dorm rooms actually look at the dorm forms? Or are freshmen deliberately mixed? Or is the process just random? I ask because it looks as though my temp dorm roomate and I couldn't be more different from one another. (It doesn't look as though it's going to be a good difference.) I'm wondering what the point was in filling out the roommate info form - it clearly was not used, and that's disappointing.

Maybe they thought opposite would be interesting...?

Temp room assignment (and roommate assignment, I assume) is done by student housing chairs, so you never know. Still, even if your roommate is very different from you, you don't know what he/she wrote on the form, and perhaps the student housing chair thought it would be a good match.

Luckily, temp room and roommate assignments are only temporary, so you can find a roommate more to your liking during rush.

I don't think they spend a ton of time on it, and I know they turn a lot some doubles into triples that don't need to be, but it's only a couple weeks, and you probably won't be spending a ton of time in your room anyways.

I thought it was mostly random- they put most of their time and energy on the summer lottery. I always wondered why they asked you to fill out that form for a temporary roommate anyway.

Unless you're coming here for sports or FPOP, it's literally 5 days where you'll be spending nearly all of your time doing REX and Orientation. If you can't live with that, you're going to have real problems living with your permanent roommate.

thanks everyone.

I know it's only a week or so, and I'm definitely keeping an open mind. I just wanted to know because I'm trying to understand the rationale behind the pairing, and maybe this will help me when it comes to the adjustment lottery.

From two years in a boarding school, I can say from some experience that it's best to room with someone who has different interests. You also probably don't want to room with your best friend. It's true what they say about too much time spent together makes for a... uh... not best arrangement of roommates...
