I was assigned to Smith Hall with 5 other roommates, and I now know that that means it's a temporary space. My question is how long will it be until I find out my permanent residence? Will I have to share a double with 2 other people, or will I have one by the time I'm scheduled to move in?

When you move in, you could still be in the same situation for a week or two. . . They have you guys live in a lounge or something, IIRC. I think they put up blinds for privacy, but I remember hearing two girls with some very strong complaints about it until they were given new spaces. Others, IIRC, just had to move out when there weren’t any spaces available.

The temporary rooms in Smith are the study rooms. It’s actually extremely spacious, and you have your very own water fountain! Downside is that you have to brush your teeth in the bathroom sink. I believe it was about 3-4 weeks when ALL the temporary housing students were assigned real dorm rooms. Who knows, you might get a room your first week.

As for privacy, you are given keys to lock your “room”, and there is black paper that is taped up on the door’s window.

Most of these are reassigned well before classes start. Hang in there.
