Texas A&M University Class of 2026

Transfer vs change of major are like comparing apples to cars. Change of majors from Galveston to cstat is independent of transfers.

What major? As long as the student completes the required courses for change of major and it’s not Mays or another restricted major, then it’s a slam dunk. Housing is a con to get out of at Galveston but there can be concessions.

Give me some details on dual credit and
Major and i can give more advice. I’m a huge proponent of Galveston AND Blinn transfer but it really depends on where the student is on DC and major.

Happy to help. Message me or to email me from website if that’s easier.

Havent been on here in a few days. My son and I are visiting Galveston tomorrow and he’s pumped. He was officially admitted and even got the banner in the mail, came on Saturday. The total turnaround time from his application to admit was 3 weeks, maybe a few days more. Jezell I really hope your kid gets in to Galveston. For my son, his plan was Bio at CS, and now his major is Oceans and One Health at Galveston (which he finds interesting). We have done Zoom calls with Advisors in the Bio department at CS, who told us it’s very straight foward… just make sure he takes the correct math, bio, and chem classes this fall and then he just does a ‘CHANGE MAJOR’. It’s very easy, not a Transfer. The hard part, though, would be that you have to pay for a dorm / food for 1 year. So we’d be walking away from the dorm but still paying. So I am sure my son will finish his freshman year at Galveston. Honestly, he kind of thinks it sounds neat to be at a smaller version of A&M with small class sizes, on the beach, etc. The Galveston ‘strat’ as my son calls it, is what he’s attempting. But he also is happy to be at Galveston. Tomororrow he’ll meet a professor/ advisor as well for his major… and do the general tour. Leaving at 6AM!

@misterhemmings Congrats on the acceptance!!
I am So Excited for y’all! I truly hope your son will fall in love with the campus, from the minute you get out of the car.
Personally, I think it would be a HUGE disservice to any student, to attempt to only do a semester anywhere (true university, not community college).
Let your student get the full benefit of a true freshman year-that includes making friends, gaining maturity, figuring out study habits, getting acclimated to being away from home, just embracing being a college freshman. You only get once chance to do that. Transferring anywhere mid year just isn’t ideal. No one makes a big deal about January transfers, they just never quite fit in.
Start of school year has a big T-Camp (transfer version of Fish Camp), everyone can enjoy as little or as much of Howdy Week as they want to, etc.
KEEP US POSTED ON YOUT VISIT!!
Drive carefully.

Thank you. I don’t disagree at all with your points- I hope he stays in Galveston the full year, for the reasons you stated, and I’m basically telling him that is the plan. I hope he likes it tomorrow. I didn’t know there was a transfer camp so maybe he’d do that next fall.

@misterhemmings yes! There’s T-Camp for transfers! It’s a ‘Fish Camp’ specifically for all transfer students. Link below is for 2022 dates, but you can view website to get an idea. A great way to transition to College Station, learn traditions, meet people. They have a FB page, too.

So many great opportunities at Galveston, especially the smaller class size and dorms right on the water! Lots of personal attention by professors, too. Insist on taking advantage of that for the whole year.

Can’t wait for your update tomorrow night!

I have family members who were Sea Ags and the students there are able to form much tighter bonds within their class than at College Station, IMO, just because of size. It’s very “old army” in that way. I think main campus feels cohesive because of the traditions binding so many students but you really can’t get to know the same percentage of the 10k students in your class.

Our OOS son is very fortunate to be a NMF and will be receiving an OOS Tuition Waiver. The NMF scholarships are showing up in his Howdy portal but there is nothing about the Tuition Waiver. Has anyone been down this path in the past and can give some guidance as to when it may appear?

@misterhemmings me too!

@kcmodad i would contact Office of Scholarship and Financial Aid
https://financialaid.tamu.edu/Contact-Us/Contact-Our-Offices

My ‘19 son’s waiver did not show up until few weeks before tuition due day. But at that time, NMF first choice decision was 5/31. This year was 3/1. Hopefully we will hear sooner.

Fyi it just came to my attention that some of my emails from my Aggie2Aggie site went to an old address. If you ever click on the wanna chat button and email me… and I don’t reply… I didn’t get it. I promise to never leave you hanging lol.

My son liked A&M Galveston. The tour guide, Vera Walker, was one of the best admissions tour guide’s we’ve seen! (And my son has done a LOT of tours). Dorms seemed nicer than College Station (bigger), nice new buildings for science labs (where he’ll be). Although the surrounding area is industrial, it’s really cool that the campus is on the ocean. The kids get access to pull tickets for Kyle Field early (although it’s a 3 hour drive so not sure how often he’ll go up for games unless he makes friends there who all want to ride together). We met with a professor who teaches Chemistry and she showed us classrooms and labs. I think my son’s plan will be to do one year in Galveston before changing major to Biology, in A&M College Station. We have a Zoom appointment with an advisor at College Station today, to triple confirm that plan would work. From what we can see online (these are older links/ documents) it looks very easy. In fact, if he did a transfer from Blinn, he’d be required to have MATH 2413 (151), MATH 2414 (152), CHEM 1411 (119), CHEM 1412 (120), BIO 1406 (111), BIO 1407 (112).

If he does A&M Galveston campus, the requirements for a ‘Change Major’ to Biology ? 12 hours – no math! According to this…

Change of Major Requirements (look at Bio)
https://tap.tamu.edu/TransitionAcademicPrograms/media/Assets/files/CHANGE-OF-MAJOR-Sep17(2018).pdf

Transfer Sheet (the form he will fill out?)
https://us.tamu.edu/us/media/media_change_of_curriculum/SC/BS-BIOL.pdf

So all of that being said - to me it seems so easy to do Galveston in terms of the course work, to become a full blown Biology major at College Station – compared to Transferring where he might have to do 2 years at Blinn if he can’t place into the proper Math class right away.

There is no PSA offered for Biology, although he was given PSA.

He hasn’t made a full decision until after we talk to the Biology Advisor today on Zoom to confirm. EDIT: UPDATE! We just finished a call with an advisor at A&M College Station inside the Biology department. They confirmed that, indeed, all you need is 12 hours and to take 2 classes (the first Bio, the first Chem) and have a B or above in those two classes and a 2.5 overall. And you can ‘Change Major’ in December, and they approve it quickly. My son wouldn’t necessarily do this in December, he’d likely finish his freshman year at Galveston, but it was nice to hear this all confirmed directly from the Biology department. The Galveston to College Station route is so much easier and more direct than PSA or Transfer or PTA.

Great information! Especially for me since my son is planning to do the exact same thing. The only difference is he is starting with Marine Biology and will be doing a change of major to Biology.

Dumb question… I thought I had read somewhere that the student needs to set up a meeting with the advisor prior to NSC. I can’t seem to find it when I have looked for it the last few days. Am I remembering correctly or was I dreaming? Lol If so, should it be the CALS team or regular advisor?

My son is doing the same thing. Starting Oceans One Health major in Galveston then switching to Kinesiology Applied Exercise Physiology. He also spoke to an advisor at TAMUG when we visited. Confirmed only 12hr required to change majors. (Math 140, Math 142 & 2 Science courses 3.0gpa) overall 2.75gpa. He plans to spend his first year in Galveston. TAMUG will be a great transition for my son to College Station. You can’t beat the 16/1 student to teacher ratio for classes.

Hmmm. I haven’t read this anywhere. A meeting with a Biology advisor? Or with Galveston Marine Bio advisor? We have been told both by his advisor at Galveston / Oceans and One Health (Jhenny Galan) and a Biology advisor at College Station (on zoom today) what the requirements were and they both said he technically could switch majors in december provided he had taken Biology and Chemistry and had a B or higher and overall 2.5 GPA. They didn’t mention any other requirements. I even asked today ‘Is there anything that could be a ‘gotcha’ that we aren’t aware of?’ and he said no.

Agreed!

Thank you! I figured I must have dreamed it. Lol
My son has already accepted, applied for housing, and has been running down the check list. We never had the opportunity to schedule a visit the campus Galveston so NSC will be the first. Of course we have taken a few vacations in the area so are a little familiar with the area.

Recommend a Segway tour. I know it sounds stupid but I’m dead serious. It’s the best way to see the place and my son started to like Galveston based on that tour of the downtown and historic houses area.
