Texas A&M?

Hello! I am looking to apply to Texas A&M (College Station) this fall.
I have around a 3.4 GPA (unweighted) and a 3.9 GPA (weighted–ugh!).
My ACT is a 29 composite with a 34 in English and 27 in math.
Unfortunately, my class rank is around the top 35%, but I am at a very competitive school in the Houston area.
I have taken an AP class and a couple honors classes last year. This year, I will be taking an honors class, two dual credit classes, and an AP class.
I worked part of last school year and continued that same job this summer.
I am actively involved in orchestra (in the varsity level and a member of the student orchestra board), as well as a member of a couple clubs in and out of school.
I am planning on visiting A&M later this month, but I am so anxious and have so many questions. Could y’all help me out?
What is the acceptance rate for full admission in to TAMU (College Station) for review applicants?
What are my chances?
What can I do to improve my chances?
One last thing (I may have to ask my counselor about this as well), our class ranks and GPAs will be updated sometime in late September. Should I wait until these come out, or apply as soon as possible? I believe my new GPA will be a 4.1 (weighted), and hopefully my rank will go up a little.

.

Anyone?

In all honesty, TAMU isn’t a ridiculously competitive school, so I would say you have a pretty solid chance even with an average GPA and 2 AP’s. And, knowing that you are applying in-state gives you even more of a boost. Best of luck with applications!

Thanks, you too! I’ve heard a lot of people say that it isn’t competitive, especially since their acceptance rate is like 69%. Yet most of the people I know who are at TAMU were top 10%/NHS members/super well rounded. My brother’s friend had similar grades as me and was involved in sports but was out of state and only got in to TAMU Galveston.

anyone else?

I had similar stats to you (3.3 GPA, 27 act, top 30%) and I applied to TAMU mainly just out of curiosity. I got offered PSA, which is 1 year at a satellite (Corpus Christi, Tarelton) campus and auto transfer to A&M

Yeah, I know of people who I believe have similar stats and did PSA as well. Would essays/ECs help or does TAMU pretty much just look at numbers?

@workinghard2016 I can’t answer that definitively but my assumption would be more numerically based considering they are a major state school they receives thousands of applications

Okay, thanks! Anyone else?

bump :stuck_out_tongue:

I have nearly identical stats to you, even down to the city, so most of what I’ve gathered from my own research should apply to you. A&M has a high acceptance rate and overall average SAT/ACT scores not because it isn’t competitive, but because Texas’ auto-admissions policy for public universities grants admission to anyone within the top 10%, regardless of their stats. That being said, someone with a 3.2 UW GPA and a 24 on the ACT (whose within the 10%) can be granted admission whereas someone at a competitive school can have a 3.7 UW GPA, a 29 on the ACT, and a class rank of ~30% and be a review applicant, which is sadly not a good outlook. Since a vast majority of people accepted are within the auto-admission standards (around 80%), that leaves a small amount of spots for review applicants. That coupled with the way A&M fills majors means you have next-to-zero chance of getting into the business or engineering schools, because those two schools are by far the most popular. If I remember correctly, around 17% of review applicants are accepted, and those are a special group people at that. That 17% of students are the people who for some crazy reason didn’t auto-admit, but nonetheless had stellar stats barring their rank (~1900 SAT, ~28 ACT, 3.5+ GPA, excellent EC’s, great essays/recs).

What I’ve gathered from conversations with admissions counselors and endless hours on the internet is applying early is your best shot at being accepted, because then you show initiative in attending the school, which I’ve heard plays a big part in the admissions process at A&M. Talk with the A&M admissions office in Houston, visit more, attend a football game, do literally whatever you can to prove you want to be an Aggie. That, and just be unique. Make your app memorable. You’re one of 20,000 review applicants, and there’s only around 3400 spots open, you’ll need to be different in some way.

Thanks so much!! I’m going to talk with an admissions counselor today  I really hope I’ll be that lucky 17%! I kinda hate how some may have worse stats than me but can get in because they’re top 10% :frowning:
