Texas Top Ten Percent Rule

College applications are due November of Senior year, but the rule claims that any student graduating in the top 10% are automatically admitted. Does this mean that if you are in the top 10 when you’re admitted, if you drop out of the top ten percent then your admission may be taken away?

I would also like to know this great question’s answer. Thank you for asking.

Excellent question. Conversely, what if you move UP to the top ten percent by the end of senior year but after you’ve been denied admission?

From UT’s website: “Rescinding offers of admission. The Office of Admissions has the authority to rescind an offer of admission to a student who, after being admitted to the University, fails to maintain the level of academic, achievement, or honor code standards that were displayed in the information the student submitted when applying for admission to the University.”

I read the law, and it said the initial decision is based on the rank no earlier than that held at the end of the junior year. So I don’t think you could get admission if your rank improved, but you might try an appeal.

Do you know of anyone who dropped out of 7 that were rescinded admission?

I am not aware of any being rescinded due to lowered rank in senior year.

I would think some people would be talking about it on CC like they do about Cal schools.

Doesn’t the ranking change (not always 10%) periodically, too? I don’t think it was 10% last year.

It is 10% for all schools except UT Austin, where it does change periodically. UT Austin uses whatever percentage will enable them to fill 75% of the class using automatic admissions. Most recently that has been 7%.
