I can see on the Pitt site and the usedbook site where you can reserve books by submitting relevant course information. Is there a place online where you can find ahead of time what the required texts are, by professor? Do professors post this information on their web pages?

When the price list is posted online August 15, you can see what the required texts are.

Where would this price list be?

On the Pitt Book Center site. There will be a big clickable button when it is posted.

Thanks. I wish they put it up earlier though! I don't want to resort to buying the books at the book center for $500.

Try amazon.

That's the point. We'd love to try Amazon NOW but without any titles that's not an option. I agree that August 15th is too late.

You can just wait till your classes start and find out. You won't really need a book for the first week of class.

I know, but I figure it would be easier to find a good deal earlier than the first week of classes.

The engineering school posts the text books needed for various classes on their website. They are available now. Perhaps other departments/schools do as well?

Yeah, I don't know why they take so long to post book lists. Friends at other schools say it's the same way there. You can e-mail your professors and ask what books are needed, I've done that in the past and they always respond quickly.

Unfortunately the professors aren't even listed for half of my courses (it just says "staff"). Any idea when they'll get all that sorted out, too?

Go to Page 2 of the Pitt section, and read my post "Purchasing Textbooks". I asked a similar questions and the answer I got from Tennisguy in Post #3 was right on. We used this information and were able to order all of my D's books, for a savings of about $500! We ended up ordering them at half.com but the links in that post were so useful in getting the right editions/authors/etc. We ordered books in "Like New" conditions, and I can tell you, these books are terrific in every case. No highlighting, no writing, no marks. Excellent!

Kschmidt: Thanks SO much to you and to Tennisguy. I knew there was an earlier thread about textbooks but I forgot that there was even a second page with posts.
